Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wjl88 on 2/17/2024 & rated 93 points: Mold on top of the cork, a very good sign, but in this case the cork was completely soaked through.

Very ripe with quite a bit of botrytis. This bottle had the acidity to back it up, unlike the bottle I had a few months back at a restaurant. Starts off a bit disjointed, with quiet thoughts of "premox...?" but enough fruit and acidity to keep drinking, although it hits with a slight awkward bitter finish.

The wine evolves quite a bit with air. The finish becomes full. A brief moment where the wine tastes a bit stale before the acidity integrates with the fruit. A bit of lift carries the wine. If it had a bit more concentration and more acid, it would remind me a bit of Montrachet, certainly not Macon. Some nuttiness develops in the finish, particularly hit by hazelnuts.

Quite a good showing, unlike the previous bottle of this that reminded me more of white Rhone due to the lack of acidity. Perhaps the acidity variance is definitely a sign that if you still have this, you should *definitely* be drinking these now. (298 views)

Strålende vin i munn. Fyldig og bredskuldret stil, men oppleves som så raffinert og salig nå, i voksen alder. Sødmefull gul frukt, flott friskhet. En nydelig vin! (607 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 1/29/2021: Dark color but the wine is still lively and drinking well. There are some nice honey/aged notes but also plenty of acidity and life left to keep things interesting. (812 views)
Tasted by chcook on 12/23/2015: seemed oxidized and tired compared with the 2002 Rosemary's vineyard from Talley. maybe a little too much oak for the slightly flabby fruit? my advice is drink soon, or drink without a more lively competitor. the '98 Village MP was more lively 2 nights ago (1620 views)
Tasted by french16 on 9/4/2014: Pretty impressive and nice to see a sound bottle after several premixed ones. Mineral, rich, could be a Grand Cru white Burg wit its depth and power. Low in acid. (2173 views)
Tasted by Cricket Hill on 9/14/2012 & rated 94 points: Enjoyed a bottle of this with my best friend. Vivid color, aroma and taste developed with time out of the bottle. A little pear and pineapple and lot of minerality. WOW! Hits with a soft palate with lingering finish. (3005 views)
Tasted by PhDP on 5/11/2011: Guffens-Heynen (groupe du mercredi, Bruxelles, Belgium, chez PhDP): premier nez "bizarre": après aération, complexe et pur, "grand chablis"

Tasted by t-slow on 4/4/2011 & rated 92 points: Excellent good balance. Superb minerality. (2926 views)
Tasted by t-slow on 6/18/2010 & rated 92 points: Good purity.Excellent. Lovely fruits on the nose, melony, very tropical. Good balance on the palate and such length! (2370 views)
Tasted by t-slow on 3/9/2010 & rated 92 points: Indeed an incredible maconaise wine. What value for money. This bottle seem richer and fatter without losing the acidity and minerality. (2082 views)
Tasted by t-slow on 3/2/2010 & rated 92 points: Consistently good. Probably at the plateau now and will need to the drunk. (1697 views)
Tasted by t-slow on 2/26/2010 & rated 93 points: This marconaise is as good as a mersault. Rather pale in colour but offers an incredible nose that evolves as it warms up, lots of white fruits, minerality an hints of citrus zest. Light oak on the palate and a richness that is well balanced. (1673 views)
Tasted by t-slow on 2/26/2010 & rated 92 points: An equally good bottle. Had it with grilled snapper a couple of days ago. Leaner than the earlier botlle but equally enjoyable. (1685 views)
Tasted by mukden on 10/9/2009 & rated 89 points: NEARLY GONE. I have been drinking several of these Guffens' Macon-Pierreclos cuvees in the last while from the 2002-2005 vintages. This is the worst of them all, not inherently so but, I think, because it is just nearly finished. Not oxidised, as such, but loosing its good looks (fruit). There is still a reasonable acidity and the taste in the mouth is good, characteristic guffens-fare. But, the good stuff fades out too quickly. Nose is not as prominent as it should be. Drink up. (1753 views)
Tasted by mjpaustin on 1/12/2008: Deep yellow/hay color. Nose shows lots of lemon zest and some tropical fruit. Palate is rich, but any oak is fully absorbed and not intrusive at all. Some mineral character comes through on the finish. This is certainly a full-bodied Macon, but drinking well right now. (2204 views)
Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 6/15/2007: With a chill, it startedly nicely with some crispness and mineral. Time, even with a re-chill, produced mostly sour oak notes and a fatness with no verve. (2196 views)
Tasted by Winetex on 4/20/2005 & rated 91 points: The first bottle was corked so we opened this one. Very solid white Burgundy - aromas of spicy oak and citrus with more citrus throughout. Concentrated with good structure. [ ~$35 on release and an OK value for the quality; 14.1% alcohol] (2282 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
