Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pbaek on 5/15/2024: Hasn’t changed much since my last bottle in 2021. Medium yellow color. A bouquet of red apples, brine, butter and citrus. Good fresh palate feel, salty caramel, butter, apples, spices and citrus marks with a very mineral finish. Impressive for its level and by no means gone. Won’t improve further either. (60 views)
Tasted by lancethomas on 6/30/2022 & rated 90 points: Pop and poured from a cool cellar. Drinks closer to a 2014 than a 2008. Very austere and still showing great acidity. A real treat. (681 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 10/15/2021: Medium yellow color. Maturing. Brine, ripe apple, yellow fruits on the nose. Stone fruits on the palate, slightly honeyed notes, almonds, salt. Tastes like aged Chablis. Oak fully integrated now. Lovely, rich wine. (1072 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 11/10/2019: Much better on day 2 where there’s stones, salt and citrus underneath dense and round fruit. On day 1 I find there’s still a bit of oak sticking out, but today the oak seems fully integrated. This is by no means at the end of its life, surprisingly, may even develop more complexity with further aging. I have mixed feelings with Roulot’s wines but maybe its because I drink them too young. (1259 views)
Tasted by bags on 2/26/2017: had to pop 'n pour, but time made this fill out. Probably at it's peak, but maybe can hold there for several more years. (2000 views)
Tasted by FYC on 10/25/2015: Medium yellow in color. Pure rich fruit yet elegant and light. Picked up some honey notes after a couple of hours. Roulot bourgogne Blanc may be my favorite Bourgogne Blanc around. Really tasty. (2843 views)
Tasted by mjg87 on 10/24/2015: Ordered off the list. To me, the hallmark of Roulot is its purity. This was definitely classic Roulot, and it brought to mind a crystalline mountain stream with overtones of white fruit and flowers. A very enjoyable and impressive Bourgogne Blanc. (2410 views)
Tasted by RN on 12/20/2013 & rated 90 points: Some age has helped this wine fill out. It now has more body and texture without losing none of it's appealing leanness. Good wine. (3651 views)
Tasted by .M. on 8/3/2013: Velintegrert eik, sitrusdominert. Dessverre er frukten gone i munnen og korklukt fra halsen, dårlig flaske, retur. (3861 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 6/14/2013: No sulfur on this bottle, which was very strong on last week's bottle at the Tobiases. The oak is really well integrated in this bottle also. Gone is that sour oak note that I dislike and which other tasters have also recently noted. There is just a slight hint of hazelnut. It would be nice if all my bottles of Roulot Bourg Blanc would show like this. (3528 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 6/7/2013: A considerable amount of matchstick or sulfur on the nose. But, thankfully, this is not showing the oak notes that this wine has shown in the past. Minerals and good energy. One must get past the sulfur nose, however. Dinner at the Tobiases. (2829 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 4/5/2013: Deb opened this while I was out drinking Verset and Texier with the boys, and my tasting note is from one night later. Just about identical to my tasting note from last month. This has calmed a lot over the last couple of years and now shouts less, but the oak is obvious and the sour oak notes are, as usual, too much for me. (2945 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 3/1/2013: Aging this a bit has been good, in that the wine has calmed and now shouts less, and the oak is better absorbed. Still, there is a hint of sour oak, but it's in the background. Good clarity to the palate, and plenty of cool toned, lemon/lime sorbet on the palate. While I am not blown away, I do think it's a better wine than when this was young and showed excessive amounts of oak. (1902 views)
Tasted by Cinsault86 on 9/30/2012 & rated 88 points: En fantastisk Bourgogne Blanc. Masse konsentrasjon for sitt nivå. Flott balanse. Frisk sitronsyre. 88p (2057 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 9/8/2012: Medium yellow. A bit surprising there is overt new oak on the nose. Intrusive. Pronounced oak on the palate as well - even to a point where it feels like it steals the show from the fruit and dries it out almost entirely. I understand from PKnut's note the the oak will settle with air and after several days after opening. We shall see, right now this is not something I enjoy drinking at all. This oak must be something that has come on over the last year or so as previous notes did not hint to this issue being so pronounced. UPDATE: the oak did indeed subside after 24 hours and I got more clear citrusy and floral flavors. This turned out to be quite good on day 2. Needs time I think. (1899 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 8/10/2012: I followed this wine over three nights, and preferred it on the third and last night, when the oak was more in the background. At first, this comes across as a big, toasty and somewhat coarse wine, sort of a combination of Meursault and an oaky Chard from California. I even detected a whiff of coconut, which to me normally signals new oak and is not something I like. I think air calms the wine and brings it into better balance, whereupon it shows like a young, Meursault-light, with hazelnut and oak notes. Check again in 6-12 months. (1957 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 5/9/2012: Very nice. Over the past six months, the wood has integrated more, the wine doesn't shout as much as it has in past.
Hazelnut on the palate, nice acids, finish goes on in waves. Tangy, juicy acids, dried pineapple. New wood, but overall, I like it.
Coming into a good zone, and if the wood integrates more, this could be great in 6-12 months. (2008 views)
Tasted by jwsmith on 2/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Really nice crisp clean bitter chablis like finish.. (2132 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 1/20/2012 & rated 90 points: A good showing, dispite a bit of a rough, jagged, disjointed start. Upon opening this showed a reduced, sulphured, slight-oak laced-orchard-fruited profile. On day two, this settled down considerably and showed a nice mineral, lemon cream and granny smith apple taste. The minerality of Chablis, with the body of Meursault. Very good acidity. (2150 views)
Tasted by bags on 1/7/2012: I agree with Pknut, at least 2 hours after opening. Just so much oak. Second day, very much improved but still some lingering oak. (2268 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 11/23/2011: This particular bottle showed rather strong oak when first opened, like a young Meursault that needs to absorb its wood. The wood faded over the course of the next two nights, and the wine showed purer and clearer, but I'm still not a big fan of where this wine is right now vis-a-vis its oak. (2297 views)
Tasted by jwsmith on 9/26/2011 & rated 90 points: Awesome amazing value (2421 views)
Tasted by thomasito2001 on 9/21/2011 & rated 92 points: Again flying at very high altitude and would put many PC to shame. The nose is extremely fresh and focussed with strong lemon scents, oak integrated in a very harmoniuos way. Palate is incredibly wide, almost full-bodied but combined with a razor-sharp acidity which gives the wine momentum and poise. Finish is good. Super stuff. (2511 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 9/14/2011 & rated 91 points: Another great showing. This had a crisp, lean, precise texture, offering up lemons, white flowers, minerals, apple and pears. Chiseled, yet there was some hint of lees which buffered the crispness with a bit of sap. Nice palate adhesion and complexity for a wine at this level. (2530 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 8/20/2011 & rated 90 points: Picked up a few bottles based on the rave reviews here... this did not disappoint. A nice combination of sleek lemons and minerals, with a slight nut/spice/creaminess from the judicious oak treatment. Superb balance and complexity for a wine at this level. Nice Chablis/Meursault hybrid. (2574 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
