Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cannym on 8/21/2014 & rated 88 points: Bright deep ruby. Lots of blackberry fruits, some purple plum. Touch of perfumed pot pourri. Decent acidity. Elegant. Definitely a touch of St Joseph or Crozes about this. But maybe not such great value at UK prices, suspect pretty good at USA ones. (3241 views)
Tasted by VinLancaster on 8/10/2013: Blind Comparison Tasting (Folin Cellars Carlton Tasting Room): Brett, barnyard predominate the red and blue fruit notes. Bitter leather, over extracted fruit and sharp anchored finish, this was overdone and one-dimensional. (3794 views)
Tasted by Reptibark on 11/22/2012 & rated 88 points: Good, not great CA Syrah. Admittedly, the wasn't blind and I have a slight bias against Randall, but the wine showed a touch of earthy, game, round dark fruit, a touch of bacon-like cooked meat and mild tannins. A fine wine for Tuesday. (4890 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 3/29/2012 & rated 89 points: Violets and floral notes along with berries on the nose. Medium bodied palate is more meaty and savoury. (5329 views)
Tasted by AlexGarner on 3/10/2012 & rated 89 points: Stars of the Melbourne Wine and Food Festival (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): A very herbaceous and intense nose, with leather and currants. The palette is chock full of dry tannin and backed with very ripe berries. Even though it has a few years on it now, is still really racy and the mouth feel is quite grippy, so some food would be a good idea. Ideally cured meats and some pickled vegetables. (5950 views)
Tasted by chatters on 3/8/2012: Bonny Doon Vineyard Masterclass (Fix St. James, 111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney): Nose Farmyard funk, liquorice, black pepper, black berry, biscuit
Mouth blackberry, front of mouth phenolic grip, meaty biscuit, slight yeast and oxidation...mouthfilling. it's a bit dirty but this is not an issue for me. (2687 views)
Tasted by bobpsi on 11/25/2011 & rated 88 points: Similar to previous bottle, except better body and longer finish this time. (3313 views)
Tasted by hubas on 11/20/2011 & rated 89 points: Lots of fruit. very well balanced. (2510 views)
Tasted by atubbs on 9/14/2011 & rated 87 points: Clear, deep garnet. Smoke, olives, anise on the nose. Earthy and tannic, but a little empty on the palate. Finish is nice and long, if simple. A wine I like to smell more than I like to drink, but still nice at this price point. (2560 views)
Tasted by bobpsi on 7/22/2011 & rated 86 points: P&P Big nose of black fruits , meat and spice. Not so much on the palete, a little thin. (2781 views)
Tasted by mhondo17 on 6/25/2011 & rated 88 points: Huge nose that fills the room. Pallette doesn't quite back it up. Good, just lacks a little backbone, could use a touch more balance towards the finish. (2916 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 6/16/2011 & rated 87 points: No notes. Pleasant, conservatively fruity (dark and earthy), ready to drink. Good food wine, and especially well suited for burgers. (3053 views)
Tasted by 022599 on 5/28/2011 & rated 81 points: no fruit, not enough structure. very deceiving. (3115 views)
Tasted by Fitzmaug on 5/9/2011 & rated 85 points: Nice (3165 views)
Tasted by grdnbrrtt on 4/16/2011 & rated 88 points: SCMWA Passport April 2011. Skirt Steak. Huge flavors; great price. (3101 views)
Tasted by Jason Rzutkiewicz on 12/14/2010 & rated 87 points: (13.5%) A fantastic nose this one shows nice plum and blackberry notes with black pepper, earthiness and hints of acidity. It starts juicy on the palate with dark fruits before a firm mineral backbone emerges that shows nice acidity and dries out the mid-palate. From there the finish turns leathery, showing licorice notes and vibrant tannins which linger nicely. This one feels big on the palate but has a cutting acidity which makes it lights on its feet. A food friendly offering that may mellow with some more time in the bottle (or in a decanter) but if you open it sooner rather than later lamb (or wild game) makes an excellent pairing. (4048 views)
Tasted by jamieirving on 12/12/2010 & rated 89 points: Made from 100% Central Coast Syrah, this is a very French-style wine with plenty of earthiness, white pepper and liquorice. Always a good bet and always good value. (3718 views)
Tasted by WagesOfZin on 9/30/2010 & rated 81 points: extremely restrained nose. i think i found some dark fruit with some effort. almost as restrained on the palate. dark fruit and a bit of tannin in a very heavy, clunky, gloppy, bland ACME kind of way. i was extremely unimpressed with this. (4370 views)
Tasted by chayward on 8/27/2010 & rated 89 points: Very good nose: dark fruit and pepper, mainly, but some other components also. Inky purple color. Very concentrated, with a thick mouthfeel and tannins that coat the palate. Long finish. Quite complex and interesting. This is a very nice syrah, especially at this price point. (4182 views)
Tasted by dke on 8/18/2010 & rated 88 points: Bonny Doon's tasting room (Santa Cruz): (at the winery) Creamy leather, olives and some meat. nice (3718 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
