Tasted by Dr.Scott on 6/5/2023 & rated 90 points: 11th bottle of a case bought on futures at the MacArthur Barrel tasting. Seemed a little old and tired. Will drink the last bottle soon. (413 views)
Tasted by Mneumeier on 2/22/2023 & rated 51 points: Sadly not good. (488 views)
Tasted by G_H on 10/4/2022 & rated 96 points: This continues to shine. Perfect maturity level, but still lots of fruit. Great balance (692 views)
Tasted by SkyCellar on 9/19/2021 & rated 93 points: A little bit old the hill, but still nice. Opened up nicely after an hour. (958 views)
Tasted by DLeeds on 9/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Great 28 year old bottle (1246 views)
Tasted by G_H on 6/5/2020 & rated 95 points: Stunning! No sign of age, beautiful ripe California cab. nice sweetness and great harmony with an opulent mouthfeel and long finish (1120 views)
Tasted by In vino potestus est on 6/3/2019: Aging with grace. Dark color. Damp, must on the nose. Excellent fruit early with some fade over several hours into mellow prunes and stewed fruit. As expected. Probably stable over next 3-5 years (1445 views)
Tasted by In vino potestus est on 3/23/2018: Cellared since release. Removed from cellar and used Coravin to pour one glass. Rich sturdy color with scant signs of aging. It has a complex, nuanced bouquet of dark fruits, prunes, tobacco, damp earth, barnyard and eucalyptus. The menthol notes gained ground with more time in the glass and almost overpowers the fruit. Flavors of licorice, cassis, plums and menthol. Bordeaux structure. Medium body and medium finish. Pleasant, if not exhilirating. It has some life left. (1850 views)
Tasted by crsprout on 12/24/2015 & rated 93 points: Jeff brought this for Christmas Eve dinner 2015. (3053 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 12/21/2015: stewed fruit, palate is fading..red fruits, tannic, decent finish. past its prime. (2578 views)
Tasted by stoneb on 11/16/2013 & rated 88 points: Kept this one too long. Deep purple color with a touch of amber at the rim. Muted cabernet nose. Black fruit on palate. Short finish. Still good wine, but much diminished from 5 or 6 years ago. Drink soon. (3850 views)
Tasted by St Paul on 9/22/2011 & rated 90 points: Very hard to give a point due to the fact that it was lovely the first 5 minutes and then died more or less. So lets say it started off in the region of 92-93 points with a grand Bordeaux like nose and beautiful in the mouth with great structure. Sweet lovely fruit. After 5 minutes it was tandoori in the nose. Curry!....and it lost everything in the mouth (80 p) so maybe 90 is a good meeting point. (4860 views)
Tasted by DruStemm on 8/28/2010 & rated 93 points: Bouquet: Old vines, deep dirt, very complex out of the bottle but slightly decanted, dusty, cherries and currant, heavy copper, and slight fennel.
Palate: Major paprika and white pepper, fennel, heavy mushrooms with sweet carmalized onion on the mid. (5100 views)
Tasted by overspeed62 on 10/11/2009 & rated 79 points: Not sure if it was flawed but it was another mediocre bottle bought via Acker. Rob and Brian tried and agreed that it wasn't very good. (4435 views)
Tasted by Melli on 7/19/2007 flawed bottle: Something wrong...not corked but lacking from what I have experienced with prior PM '92's. Luck of the draw I guess. (4749 views)
Tasted by Phin on 6/12/2007 & rated 84 points: I was super excited to have this and it was a let down. I think the age wore down the tannic strength that I like. The wine was medium body with moderate fruit but fell off on the finish. No grip or complexity. (3875 views)
Tasted by Melli on 2/11/2007 & rated 94 points: Subtle fruit, great balance and full of life. Pleasant surprise at youthful appeal of this 15 yr wine (3412 views)
Tasted by festiva on 10/23/2005 & rated 96 points: Served with cake & ice cream at my kids' birthday party. Believe me, this wine was the perfect remedy for 15 screaming 3 year olds and Jello the Clown! Decanted 3 1/2 hours before serving. The bottle had a fair amount of fine, grainy sediment. Color was deep, dark red, with just a tinge of rusty brown. Initially, the wine had a funky sort of green olive smell to it, but it blew off after an hour or so in the decanter. Upon serving, it was spectacular! Rich, thick aromas of coffee beans, cedar, black currants, and leather. More of the same on the palate, especially the coffee beans and leather. Our group also noted pencil lead, plums, and minerals. Tannins were rich and soft, giving this wine an incredible backbone and texture. I found the finish rather short for this type of wine: 30+ seconds. All in, this reminded me of a really good Right Bank Bordeaux. (3836 views)
Tasted by michaelgor on 5/1/2005 & rated 94 points: drank as backup bottle for my birthday, first bottle 1992 dominus was corked !!
layers of vanilla, oak, sweet fruit, COFFEE, on nose...on the palate unctuous, viscous delicious long finish (4154 views)

Peter Michael

Producer website

The Peter Michael Winery is the California outpost of British-born Sir Peter Michael who has shown a Midas touch for selecting brilliant winemakers, including Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, Luc Morlet and more recently Luc’s brother, Nicolas. The consistency of these offerings from the cool climate hillside vineyards in Knight’s Valley and the Sonoma Coast has been respected and cherished by each of these winemakers... All things considered, Peter Michael is one of the reference point wineries in California.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
