Tasted by Rbhan12 on 3/19/2024 & rated 94 points: A very generous gift from a good friend. Decanted off sei

Decanted off sediment for an hour. Gorgeous nose of dark dried fruits complexed with warm earth and a hint of savory. Palate is so so classy. Elegant, ethereal, fully integrated and coalesced. True red fruit that has some density, olive brine, graphite, cedar. Finish is gentle and shows those fully integrated and supple tannins.

Just fantastic and in a perfect spot. For my palate the time to drink this wine is now. 94-95 comfortably. (328 views)
Tasted by ajrez on 1/9/2024 & rated 94 points: In a great spot! Give it an hour of air (585 views)
Tasted by Lipsman on 8/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Berries, cherries, licorice, earthy tannins still present, bright notes, full bodied, saturated with flavor, balanced, long and evolving flavors on the finish, well made. Drink now - 2030. (1133 views)
Tasted by Ruby99 on 11/19/2022 & rated 93 points: Opened immediately after a 1993 that was past, I was worried that the 1994 would also be far along the downslope even though - ay=t least in our cellar - 1994 has proven to be a superb and long lived vintage for California Cabernets.
Not nearly as brick colored as the 1993 and with a nose that was more raspberry fruit and leather than sherry, I was reassured.
Initially however the wine was quite restrained to the point that I disappointedly thought most of the the fruit was gone. Not unpleasant in any way and totally drinkable with even some tannin still to resolve with time, I was thinking 90-91 points.
However over 2-3 hours thru the evening it improved so that my last glass was excellent with a lovely floral aromatic profile and delicious raspberry fruit
Despite the late rally, I think this wine is a bit beyond its peak and would recommend drinking any remaining bottles soon (1717 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/16/2022 & rated 93 points: The Last Dinner at Dinner (Dinner by Heston Blumenthal): Our third time with this wine over the last 10 years or so and definitely the wine is on the way down. At first we really liked it when it was younger and brighter and could hold the a bit overripe fruit. Back then was a 96 now is a 93 at best as the lack of freshness post the evolution just highlights that the winemaker lost control of it and now its paying the price. Its not porty or burnt but lacks elegance and beauty that one would expect from this level of pedigree. The 1996 for example that we tried recently that comes from a less ripe year was an exceptional 97 from us . This 1994 is at best 93 and better drink now. (2205 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/10/2022: Return to Napa; 3/6/2022-3/13/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): This wine never quite shows the way I expect it to given the reputation. Perhaps it was just tight. We didn’t decant this time around (did the last time and between that and air the wine got to a really nice spot). So it was a bit less expressive and on the heels of the Gonon which was open and ready for business spoke a bit less. (3420 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 2/3/2022 & rated 96 points: Couples night with Wines That Don't Suck (My house): Pop and pour. Mint and slight funk on the nose. Red fruit, green tannin and some beef blood on the palate. This is fabulous, especially for California. (2573 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/3/2022 & rated 96 points: Guy's Night Goes "Couples": Open Something Interesting (Joe & Khem's Place, Mpls): Very dark red color with a 5mm transitional margin. PNP, drank a glass plus over 4 hours. Oh baby, is this a nice nose or what. Eucalyptus, savory, subtle funk notes, dried flowers, dried cedar, blackberry, black currants, menthol and a building perfume; ooh lala. The palate is right there with the nose, medium full bodied, earthy, deep cherry, cassis tobacco, menthol, well spiced with dried woodsy notes and gravelly minerality. This is in a great place, but still has tons of life left, it should go another 10-15 years. (2409 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 2/3/2022 & rated 96 points: Couples Night at Joe's with Anything Goes!: PnP - One of my niece's attended a wine dinner with me, so we picked out a birth year wine for her....this one. It was superb! Nose showed Eucalyptus, violets, plum, blackberry, a slight funk (in a good way), and some cedar and spice notes, with some air, it also added some forest floor and dried wood notes. The nose was so fragrant and compelling, I hesitated to take a drink because I was in fear of a let down. Alas, the palate was equal to the task, showing dark fruit, leather and bramble notes followed by notes of mint and herbs, coupled with hints of toasty oak and tar. Everyone's WOTN! 96+ for me, and that may be conservative! Wish I had more of this one! (2617 views)
Tasted by Kevnzworld on 1/15/2022 & rated 94 points: PNP Antico
Cherry, tobacco, slightly pruny and hot. Some sharp edges initially but mellowed out with time as the fruit filled out.
Alas this needed a decant (1745 views)

Tasted by englishman's claret on 8/31/2020 & rated 91 points: Quite ripe, the sur-maturite notes muddling the precision and freshness that might have been there when this was younger. Sub-prime bottle? (3426 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 1/1/2020 & rated 98 points: blind
A nearly perfect aged Cali Cab. The origine was clear but the vintage was "difficult". So young, so fresh, still primary notes. Not reached his complete peak. 98+ (3279 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 11/8/2019 & rated 95 points: Napa Cult CabSav 1994 dinner (Singapore): Expressive nose of ripe fruit, oak, vanilla, cherry. Full bodied on the palate and a touch dry on the finish. Among the riper wines of the night. Did not possess the complexity of the best wines. (3615 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/3/2019 & rated 95 points: Fully mature, with olive, earth, spice, smoke and thyme accents that ride easily on top of the red fruits, there is a softness and elegance that easy to feel in the finish. There is no reason to hold this any longer. (4349 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/7/2018: Decanted for a good 2 hours. Having tried this wine 4 years ago ( Papies 96) what we had here was not the result of a healthy bottle we feel .
Tasted blind, dark, rich , porty and had the feeling of being cooked. We think the bottle was badly kept and time has not been kind to this wine from a hot year. That is once the freshness and vibrancy subsided the resulting overripe fruit just could not hold on its own. (3774 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 7/27/2018 & rated 94 points: Plummy, floral aromas that jump out of glass. Clean fruit, intense, medium body. Gorgeous wine. (4202 views)
Tasted by tazerowe on 6/20/2018 & rated 90 points: A solid, but not profound showing. Fill well into the neck and pristine cork. Color is fairly dark with some clearing at the rim. Nose is initially mulberry with a mint and olive aspect. Later some oak seems to come out. Medium to full body with classic cab flavors that echo the nose. The texture is fairly new world to me. A bit hollow in the middle and perhaps a bit short, showing no remaining tannin. I suspect this was better a little while back. (3740 views)
Tasted by Nothung on 4/6/2018 & rated 95 points: This was my last bottle and one of the best. Some of my other bottles had faded a bit, but this one was still going strong and showing beautifully. (3728 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 2/4/2018 & rated 88 points: My last bottle....well stored and in pristine condition, was a disappointment. Opened for a special occasion with family and it was clearly past its peak. Not terrible but this used to be magical. The fruit was fading and accompanied by notes of bell pepper and tomato. Hopefully not representative, though I won’t be buying more to find out. (3127 views)
Tasted by Old Vino on 1/14/2018 & rated 94 points: beautiful polished and delicious. a whiff of VA blew partially after 1 hour decant. (2987 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/10/2018: Winorama: A winter in Wineland II; 1/6/2018-1/14/2018 (Portland, Eureka, Napa): Honestly - this wine started off as 3 of 3 for the evening (granted some tough competition - a 2015 MACDONALD and a 1995 Pahlmyer). Thankfully the previous note recommended the decant and we did that when we got the restaurant and then drank over the course of prob 3 hours. And with some time and air, this ended up being my favorite wine at this point. Really lovely. More elegant in style and not overdone, but nicely integrated and good structure with good fruit and a nice more woodsy note. Helped me understand the power of this vineyard. Great. (3474 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 1/1/2018 & rated 93 points: Dark violet with moderate bricking evident. Medium aromas of black/red fruit with moderate cedar/ menthol/ pencil lead. Wine really opened up with two hour decant. Wonderful blend of primary/ secondary/ tertiary aromas. Beautiful medium(+) palate of black/ red fruit. Moderate well integrated tannins with a long palate. Drinking really well now, not seeing a lot of improvement by waiting any longer. (2022 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
