Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by theRealPepe on 3/24/2020 & rated 90 points: Another delicious golden-hued Epire. Tangy, waxy and nutty, with mineral. Excellent. (553 views)
Tasted by vintage_whine on 12/7/2019 flawed bottle: acid is wanting, and fruit is overly oxidized. the wine suffers from excessively oxidized fruit, and is undrinkable (651 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 9/8/2019 & rated 91 points: Brown golden color. Nose of oxidized apple juice, honey and caramel. Full bodied and balanced with the same flavors as the nose and glycerine. Acid plus. Medium length and pleasant finish. Well developed with tertiary flavors. (733 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 7/11/2019 & rated 90 points: Viscous straw gold. Nose of lemon, wax mineral and demara sugar. Light and oily on the palate with strong lemon, mineral and a light touch of anise. Excellent. (760 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 9/14/2017: I did not enjoy this bottle.. it was quite interesting, but not very good; the nose clearly had botrytis and loads of honey that dominated most everything else; there was a hint of some bruised apple and peach underlying. The palate had too much acidity to match the flavor profile and made it feel disjointed and off. Not sure if this was an off bottle as I've had enjoyable wines from Epire before, but I couldn't get into this one. (1865 views)
Tasted by christyler on 7/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Decent showing - had all the stuff I like about d'Epire. Worth noting that it was not at all hot. However, it didn't impress me like this wine normally does. Good, but not at the heights of the 2010. (3400 views)
Tasted by yofog on 4/26/2013 & rated 87 points: Significantly more oxidized than the last bottle I tried, and I really couldn't help disliking it. I'm rating based on how good the rest of the wine was, assuming that not all bottles are this off. (4412 views)
Tasted by ElGreco on 3/7/2013 & rated 90 points: A little subdued on the aromatics -- some hints of lime, green apple, gruyere, chamomile, and a sort of waxy, peach aroma. On the palette: initial sweet fig newton and apple is followed by searing acidity; like smashing your teeth in with a tire iron. The finish is lengthy -- accompanied by sour strawberries, some unidentifiable nut, and signature chenin funk. This needs more time in the bottle. (4390 views)
Tasted by yofog on 9/28/2012 & rated 91 points: Structured, honeyed, minerally, sort of smokey appley yet steely fruit (4592 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 9/23/2012: Brought to a dinner where I PnP. Some wondered if it was oxidized but general consensus was that it was not. Nutty, light floral, red apple. Nice but not great. (3746 views)
Tasted by jsherdc on 4/13/2012 & rated 91 points: Nutty, with apple and lemon. very complex. 91/92 (2771 views)
Tasted by jsums on 11/28/2011 & rated 90 points: Golden color. Nose: golden apple, white currant, and some papaya fruit with raw honey, roasted chestnut/hazelnut, wildflowers, and dried straw. Medium body on the bone-dry palate: intense Meyer lemon, baked green apple, and white currant fruit with accents of dried lemon peel, chestnut/hazelnut, straw, wildflowers, and a hint of raw honey. Aggressive, driving acidity. Lingering dried lemon peel, apple skin, roasted nuts, and lots of slate on the long dry finish. Powerful, complex, well balanced. Old-school. Give it a few more years in the cellar to come together and enjoy over the next 10. (1778 views)
Tasted by fkrieger on 10/28/2011: Love it (1932 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 10/14/2011 & rated 87 points: This "friendly" wine was tasted in double-blind fashion at Vintage Wines, Ltd. The bottle was kindly provided by Dean L. Medium yellow in color, it shows a nose of cardamom, citrus and floral elements. Light-to-medium-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, well-integrated alcohol (listed as 13.5%) and citrus-dominated flavors. The middle is solid and the finish medium-length, albeit lacking in crispness. This is a pleasant Chenin Blanc which would have merited a higher score had it had a bit more acid. Due to the lack of acid, many tasters guessed it to be a white Rhone, while I guessed it to be a "round" Sancerre. Drink now-12/12. (1599 views)
Tasted by sehill on 9/25/2010 & rated 89 points: This wine showed well but required about half an hour of airing to show its best. Its starts with straightforward, almost monolithic fruit notes on the bouquet the give way to mineral, stone and floral aromatics. The color is a light yellow. The light/medium bodied palate shows good balance but seems to lack enough acidity on the palate to give the wine tension and zip. (1720 views)

Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
