 Tasted by jepstein4031 on 12/14/2023 & rated 95 points: This was amazingly alive, and can likely go on for longer. Tertiary, of course. Tons of cigar box, leather, smoke and violet. A real treat. What i most enjoyed was the balance - well integrated tannins and acid, with the stewed fruit. Definitely benefited from a relatively short decanting. (694 views)

This was the best 82 Pavie I have had in many years. It reminded me of why I loved it back during the early peak window. Serious bottle variation over last 4 tasted. This one was the best and great timing for an incredible dinner at 1862. Beautful example of this with the fruits of old but more refined and slighly faded but definitely present and just delightful secondary and tertiiary elements and a gorgeous mouthfeel.  Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/22/2022: 80's Bordeaux (Friend's house): This wine has a special place because it was one of the first 'real wines' that we just pulled out during COVID because daily drinkers work sometimes but sometimes it's nicer to drink better. And this is certainly many steps up from the daily drinker category. It's to me a truly lovely wine. Very bright. Red fruits. Granite. In a nice drinking window but not going anywhere anytime soon.  Tasted by Triforwine on 2/13/2021 & rated 95 points: Opened for lunch with Durand. One of my favorite wines when it was at peak in the late 1990s. Mid neck fill. Minimal sediment. Decanted and it was ready to go. Great news as the last two prior bottles were 1) flat and essentially dead when I tasted 2) corked and undrinkably maderized when my sister tasted. This one was immediately what I remembered though a bit less opulent than at peak. Lovely floral and fruit aroma and crimson color. Plenty of dark and dry red fruit, tobacco, vanilla and cocoa, saved some for dinner as opened something very special alongside for my 60th bday. This one still seems young enough to hold. Hope future bottles are like this one!! I enjoyed this more than 1982 la Dominique and 1990 Ducru Beaucaillou drank yesterday. Drink now with back up plan. 95 (3075 views)
 Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/12/2020: Really enjoyed this. The nose just jumps out of you. Had to decant for sediment and honestly cork since even with the Durand opener the cork crumbled. Didn't matter at all. Just drank very nicely. Lots got coffee and cocoa but I got some more bell pepper and almost a hint of green notes but in a really nice way. It's delicious. (3195 views)

First time with this beaty was in 1991, a few bottles since, It has now become an elderly gentleman with a lot charme, back then it was of course much more massive, more power, but it still has enormes amount of fruit left, tobacco, leather, dark fruit, prune classic St Emilion, perfect harmony now at almost 40'th ... . if well store it can easily be 50th ! (this one was into neck, perfect cork) Drink 2020-2030 ( I do not like the style of Pavie now a days .. . a shame as Pavie has one of the 5 best terroirs in St-Emilion) (3445 views)
 Tasted by MC2 Wines on 4/12/2020: Opened and needed a bit of time to find it's stride. Decanted for sediment and then recognized it needed a bit of air. This is a nice aged Bordeaux prob right at the peak of drinking window. The piece I liked the most was a slightly sharp, almost a bit metallic taste. There was a precision to this wine. Very clean. Very enjoyable. Went pretty perfectly with a bone-in fillet from Capital Grille (that was pretty awesome actually) as part of their take-away Easter dinner. (3344 views)

It eventually blew off and what was left was great expression of the right bank and a classic old style Pavie- which was refreshing and left me longing for the pre-Perse days. A nice nose, but awkward on the palate. The fruit is fading. Black currant, barnyard, leather, mushroom, and chocolate. Rustic on the palate. Tannins almost fully resolved. A medium length finish with high acidity. Drink this now if you have it. (6495 views)

A few of us (wine snobs who know the beauty of the 82 vintage) knew this was not in the same category as the other benchmark examples. Solid, but lacked the complexity, freshness, and lingering finish found in other wines of the vintage. This is a wine to drink now, as I can't imagine any improvement with further cellaring. Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
