Introduction

HRH and I are celebrating 30 years of "mutual toleration" as she likes to call it.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1997 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut

    France, Champagne

Granny Smith apple, lemon curd, lively acidity, pleasant toast.
We have noticed a little bottle variation; this particular bottle drank quite young and fresh.

  • 1993 Jean-Pierre Mugneret Nuits St. Georges

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Pop and pour. Ethereal aged Burgundy floral nose filled the room. The color was dark ruby with hints of orange. On the palate there were significant tannins and sweet oak with rustic dark cherry and a hint of cinnamon. After about an hour iron and blood notes emerge. Pretty finish by the end of the bottle.

  • 2008 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis Blanc

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

This still shows a generous punch of oak, sweet lemon, apple, soft minerals and light acidity. It would be fun to check again in a few years.

  • 1970 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Powdery, pale red in the glass. The nose is pure aged Vosne with exotic spices, green herbs and light tobacco. and gentle tannins. On the palate the flavors are very subtle. It has obviously lost most of its fruit but has developed lots of complexity with wild mushroom, sweet fallen leaves, slightly tart cherry with a hint of orange and clove.
    A treat.

  • 1983 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark red, smoky oak, grilled meat, bacon, black pepper (and a whiff of white pepper), dark red and black fruits, still with plenty of tannin. We had one of these last year. I think it drank a little better but this one was still fantastic.

  • 1980 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Pale red, pure essence of Syrah fruit with tart wild berry, kirsch, blue stone fruits, beautiful hints of grilled meat. There is an intoxicating blend of wild green herbs with a great balance of tannin, fruit and perfect acidity.
    More please!!
