Introduction

Chris & Ann invited us over for dinner and asked me to bring a salad and appetizer with wines to pair with my food.

Flight 1 - A glimpse of Germany (1 Note)

For my appetizer I did a mustard-horseradish schnitzel and a cucumber dill salad to pair with the Riesling.

  • 2001 Müller-Catoir Haardter Bürgergarten Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

    Color: light canary yellow

Smell: Scents of petrol, pear, peach, and green apples.

Taste: Flavors of peach, nectarine, clementine, and quince played out along a medium-long finish.

Overall: A wonderful example of German Riesling that I would gladly buy again. This had lively acidity and brilliant fruit purity that lead me to believe this could still drink well for another 4-8 years with proper storage.

Flight 2 - Salad (1 Note)

My salad was an Arugula based salad with a passion fruit, and star fruit dressing with shaved Asiago and chopped grape tomatoes.

  • 2007 Château Tour de Mirambeau Reserve 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers

Color: Pale yellow with a light green tint to it.

Smell: freshly sliced jalapeño peppers, fresh cut grass, and a lemon/lime citrus note.

Taste: Flavors of lemon, lime, mineral, and quince

Overall: A very nice wine that is aging well. It's not as acidic as I remember, but there is still a wonderful balance with this. The vibrant fruit and the acidity play well with one another and went well with the Arugula, passion fruit, and star fruit salad.

Flight 3 - Dinner (1 Note)

Braised Lamb with carrots, onions, and a wonderful gremolata

  • 1982 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Color:A brilliant ruby red with limited signs of bricking at the rim.

Smell: Earth, saddle leather, graphite, cedar, red fruit, and a slightly dusty smokiness.

Taste: A melange of red fruits, earth, black currant, and a faint hint of clove that seamlessly intertwined with one another along a 45+ second finish that made it difficult to restrain from taking another sip.

Overall: This was in a wonderful spot, and despite the saturated cork performed far beyond my expectations. The tannins while present were well integrated and soft now. There was a harmony in this wine that seemed to reach out and grab everyone at the table.

  • 1983 Château Raymond-Lafon 90 Points

    Color: golden yellow

Smell: Honey comb, nectarine, apricot, peach, and a hint of botrytis

Taste: peaches, nectarines, poached pear, and honey

Overall: A great example of a well aged sauternes with a medium length finish.

A wonderful dinner that will spur more like this in the future...it's so wonderful to find people who enjoy wines of this nature and like to cook as well.
