Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1948 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    No note - from memory...
The cork emerged much too easily, but all was well. Rich gold colour. Delicious sweet orange, with enough acidity left to balance it, and a lovely unctuous mouthfeel. Certainly WOTN, and much enjoyed by all, I think. vg

  • 1948 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

A re-issue, I am told. Certainly it's a recent bottling, in pristine condition. The contents are a rich gold colour, simultaneously sweet and acidic, in fine balance. There is a citrus lightness to it, taking on some weight with air, and providing a long and delicious finish. Seemingly ageless, it is not a big wine, nor a great one, but it impresses for its harmony and the flawless way it defies the years. g

  • 1948 Château Lafite Rothschild

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The label is illegible, but the capsule is embossed correctly, and the cork, emerging in three pieces, displays both the name and year.
Very pale brown, almost pink in the decanter. Musty, caramel and orange. Quite medicinal, almost chemical, volatile, and very acidic. Like the grin on the face of the Cheshire Cat after the cat has gone, the faded fruit gives a hint of what was there before.
Surprisingly, my guests consumed most of it, whether out of curiosity or politeness I could not say.
No question this is genuine - if anyone wanted to fake it they would have used a better wine.
