Flight 1 (1 Note)

By the time I found out this was one of kenny's new wines, it was already gone.

  • 2008 Ghostwriter Pinot Noir Woodruff Family Vineyard

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

oak expression as a high pitched grain. wild red fruits. a whole grain bread. ripe and full in the mouth. sweet dark red vine fruits. something rather wild in there. some rhubarb. bright high toned acid. new world for sure, NZ or CA.
Open top fermenter, 20-30% whole cluster, 50% new oak, no temp control. '09 is a ripeer vintage and the new oak backs off to 25%

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

my first taste of my first vintage. 2007 at Dutton-Goldfield. it took some time to come around and give it up, but it was there. The nose of the Failla was a bit funky, but the wine really came through on the palate. maybe the nose is some sonoma coast/coolerish nuance. the sinskey just came off too fruity in this set.

  • 2007 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Dutton Ranch

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

dark fruit off the nose. the subtlety of darkness. a quiet structure and black pitch. more into black raspberry fruit as this opens up in the glass. the fruit really jumps out with some air. M+ acid and nice spice around the finish. "crystalline purity" is noted. generally "softer tannin" and a "velvety" palate. velvety, yes. soft, not so soft really, but a great mouthfeel.

  • 2008 Failla Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Oddly showing some crushed peanut on the nose. an immovable peanut butter ball. that aside, quite a savoriness umami in the nose. a bit pickly. palate really shows what this wine has to offer. lead pencil. stony. medium+ acid. dark cherry and light rhubarb. a sweet depth. not as distinctly new world.

  • 2007 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Pinot Noir Los Carneros

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

the nose here is much more playful and fruity. sweet cherry fruit on the nose and much less structure is suggested. maybe it's just all that fruit suggesting there's not much to back it up? floral notes already present. cherry cough syrup. a bit medicinal. bright acid. clean fruit. "rusty tannin." "picked less ripe," 13.6%ABV. finishes of candied strawberry.
strawberry is noted to be a distinction of carneros pinot.

awesome a great true coast vs. rrv representation here with zepaltas wine. couloir is just so awesome, no doubt.

  • 2007 Zepaltas Pinot Noir W.E. Bottoms

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

very tense nose. sour cherry. nothing green in this wine. planted in 1998. cherry liquor. diseased and stressed vines. some plum in the background. highest acid yet, that really kicks on the finish.

  • 2007 Zepaltas Pinot Noir Suacci

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

a savory umami. a turgid pickle. a grassy brush of rhubarb. cinnamon. stop. cooler climate complexity. again acid is really kicking here. a savory pencil on the palate. very nice. only the vineyard source is the difference in the winemaking between this and the w.e. bottoms 07.

  • 2007 Couloir Pinot Noir Roma's Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

much more elegance in the nose than the previous. dusty and waxy at the same time. copens up. generally a softer nose than the zepaltas. a very pleasing fruit character. 50% whole cluster shows on the palate as a firm hand shake. 100% Pommard (overall soft tannin for Pommard, so..some whole cluster...??). green ashen tannin. "reductive winemaking gives brown sugar spice"

  • 2007 Paul Hobbs Chardonnay Russian River Valley

  • 2005 MacRostie Chardonnay Wildcat Mountain Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

i'll look at previous notes after i log this one, but by the looks of it ben's been tasting this a bit.
wow. kraut a bit. very unique expression. 50% new oak. something green is running up a pole. 'botrytis' is brought into the conversation, but i don't really catch why. palate shows of a plush brown butter. this is delicious. i want cauliflower gratin with this.

  • 2006 Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir

New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara

back to cherry fruit. although it strays to raspberry. a wild nature to the fruit. a depth in the nose and a waxy suggest. a green complexity to the nose that is really carried quite nicely on the palate.
