Introduction

Really wonderful evening after the boards. We pulled up a couple of older bottles from the cellar and everyone was kind enough to bring some excellent wines of their own. Great food, great wine, and most importantly great friends. Looking forward to doing this again! Most of these wines were decanted and followed in the glass over the course of a few hours. It's a good thing we did - some really did change over the course of the night.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1994 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Deep robe, showing some maturity at the disc. Animal nose, black fruits, some iodine; interesting but not too substantial on the palate. Somewhat lean, rather good. Not sure that this will improve, but it's drinking now and won't be going downhill over the next 5 years at least.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Mature; somewhat subdued nose but bright red fruits, flinty, earthen, nice wood quality, a bit balsamic. Similar on the palate. With air, a nice leathery component, spicebox. Probably better a few years back. Good, but not great; questionable QPR here but the Broadbent notes suggest some bottle variation so...

  • 1985 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Mature robe but still deep; nice sous-bois, brambly nose, also meaty and peppery. Very savory palate, nice spice notes. Put on a little weight in the glass and while enjoyable, a bit monolithic even for St. Estephe.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful brick disc, deep robe. Somewhat shy nose, but really lovely perfume; very floral, lavender, cassis, tobacco, Christmas spices, mineral, very refined oak. Plush nose, plump body, caressing palate. Almost a bacon note on the finish. I suppose I was expecting this to be more extroverted and while it wasn't loud, it was beautiful. A wine that whispers how beautiful it is in lots of different ways rather than shouting it just the once. Just exudes class.

  • 1970 Château La Gaffelière

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Deep robe, brick disc. Beautiful fruit, reduced sort of balsamic, cedar closet & mushroom kind of thing going all, but marred by acetone. Some nice floral notes as well, which made the assortment of notes enjoyable if a little odd! Has wandered down a strange road but rather nice, though. High 80s.
