Introduction

This month was David's pick and overall I would say these were some of the best wines we have had at any tasting.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Pinson Frères Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

The nose on this had me stumped, musty and somewhat stinky, but loads of minerality just below the surface. Eventually I picked up dried oranges and hard cheese rind on the nose. The palate is pretty full throttle still, lots of oak for a Chablis, it's like starfruit meets oranges, something floral and crushed pumice. The acidity starts off pretty mellow but rises up and takes over just after the mid-palate and carries the finish along for a nice ride. This shows some fantastic transitions in the way it reacts in the mouth, I was digging the crap out of this. Absolutely delicious stuff.

  • 2006 Réyane et Pascal Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Champans 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

The nose is massive, lots of red cherries and stems, red vine licorice candy and cherry cough drops. It's ALMOST offensive, but smells super tasty. The palate is heavily structured with a very nice lingering acidity and is overall balanced to the intensity of the wine. Red fruit, earth aromas, sour cherries, some wood. Everyone at the tasting agreed this is going to turn into something special. I wrote 89++, so there you go.

  • 2001 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Very sweet and fresh cherry nose, displaying nice freshness and youth still. Some minor age showing (sort of like vinaigrette) on the nose. The palate shows youthful red fruit still, slight red candy as well. The structure is quite balanced with the palate here though which leads to a nice length finish leaving both flavor and structure behind. Some age showing, but only barely. This is showing delicious but basic flavors currently, and I would say while it's drinking nicely I would let any bottles I had sleep for a another few years before checking them out. Great potential though. 89+

  • 2000 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

The nose is getting a little meaty here along with cherries, pepper and mushrooms. Nice nose. The palate hits hard with acidity right of the bat that balances out with the wine in the mid-palate, cool effect. Despite the somewhat complex nose this just didn't have it on the palate, pretty straight-forward flavor-wise. Again though, this is balanced and structurally it's all there, this just needs more time. 88+

  • 1997 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

The nose on this was so deep and delicious, mushrooms and truffles along with wet earth and old dark strawberry and cherry. Yum! Very rich smelling. The palate gives it's fruit up right off the bat, still super young. High acidity which helps carry the rich fruits out for a great long finish. Pretty heavy on the mouth compared to some of the other wines tonight. Felt pretty modern in style, but I REALLY dig it. Balanced, delicious. Drink it now or later, who cares. 91+

  • 1996 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

The nose is getting dirty, earth, cherry candies, mushrooms, something floral too... unfortunately I can't place it. The fruit is full on on the nose though, smells nice. The palate has a heavy sour red fruit attack, very high acidity, tannins, although the tannins have a very refined, nice feel. The structure lingers around a while on the palate with nice red fruit flavors as well. There is a bitter acidity that shows up on the finish but it makes my mouth water and is enjoyable. Let this baby sleep! Massive potential here. 90+ Scored 1st place out of a line-up of 10 1er Burgs.

  • 1990 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

The nose is super soft here with a bit of richness. I was getting into some conversation and didn't write many notes on the nose. The palate has youthful fruit still with loads of stems, rosebuds, red grapes and wood. Tremendous length though here, it lingers on the palate for 30+ seconds. Structurally still strong but balanced to the fruit, this could stand to sit way longer or you could drink it now, it's very enjoyable. I wrote "awesome." as the last word in my tasting note in it's own sentence so it must have been good. 91+

  • 1989 Remoissenet Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

The nose here is smelling really old, rotten wood, old cherries, balsalmic vinegar, and oddly, watermelon seeds. The palate is extremely attractive right off the bat, balanced fruit/old earth/structure plays beautifully on the palate. Some light red fruit, a healthy dose of dark fruit, rose buds, earth. This is SUPER balanced. This still shows slight signs of youth in flavor, shows a good dose of old characteristics and terroir and just feels SO nice in the mouth. Easily the most balanced Burgundy I've ever had, this is drinking so well tonight. I've yet to have that 'experience' that puts me over the edge with old Burgundy and this seems to represent what everyone's telling me good Burgundy should be. Feminine, light on it's feet, impeccably balanced, long finish and just so delicious. This wine was easily one of the best experiences I've had with aged Burgundy. (keep in mind my experience is low)

  • 1988 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

While everyone agreed there was nothing flawed about this wine, it just couldn't hold a candle to the other wines in the line-up tonight. There was a heavy dry sponge soaked in cherry juice component on the nose that was impossible to get around. The nose was fail. The palate however was more expressive and tasty, sour cherries, balsalmic notes. Unfortunately this was somewhat one dimensional and carried a sharp out-of-balance acidity. No one was really feeling this and at the end of the night this was the only bottle with wine left in it.

  • 1983 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Very old smelling, light cherries, old sponge, dried mushrooms and cranberries on the nose. The palate shows mainly sour red fruit and dry earth with a very bright acidity that seems to overpower the flavor the palate for my taste. Drinking well, very delicious but just not in balance tonight. It did score highly though amongst the other wines.

  • 1998 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

This was brought out as a end of night ringer by Toby. Massive nose compared to the old stuff I was tasting before. However, this smells freaking awesome. Rich soil, cherry pie, licorice. Awesome depth in the nose, smells really nice. The palate has a very refined feel, still strong structurally but so soft in it's approach. Balanced yet big. Great length and really delicious. Sorry I didn't give flavor descriptors on the palate, but this was a nice wine to end on for the night.
