Introduction

The UK wine merchant Goedhuis hosted evenig drinks and a few of us popped down. Strangely enough, the hotel where it was held did not allow them to serve their wines, so we had these three wines (from the hotel list ) instead. There was also a Felton Road Riesling, but I missed that.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier 91 Points

    France, Champagne

This was a nice little NV. Nose showed notes of green apples and warm herb and grass accents. Nothing too distinctive. It was on the palate where this showed really well though. Very round and nice balanced, it had a nicely textured mousse with delicious flavours of green appple, lemons and bits of spice and fresh herb towards the finish. Quite substantial, but at the same time very fresh. Pretty good stuff at this level.

  • NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

As good as always. This bottle showed why the Billecart-Salmon remains one of my go-to NV Rosé. There was absolutely nothing to dislike here. Attractive tones of strawberries and raspberries on the nose was taken up on the palate, where a freshly fruited and very inviting attack of red fruits was accompanied by a lovely midpalate where the red fuit notes were kissed by a touch of mineral and a squeeze of lime. Nice gentle bead and a lovely freshness accompanied the wine all the way into a long finish where some juicy cherries and berries came to the fore again. Yummy.

  • 2006 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 91 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

I kinda liked this. It was a good wine for sure. A bit modern, so it was not really my preferred style for Rioja, but there was nevertheless quite a bit to like here. Nose was certainly attractive. A bit sweet, with thick scents of plums and red dates accompanied by more traditional cigarette smoke and wet earth tones, but it all came together quite nicely on the bouquet. As would be expected after that, the palate was rich and plush in a modern way, with thickly layered flavours of plums and cranberries spiked with oaky notes on the attack. Swirl a bit and smoky, spicy notes, almost ashy at points start emerging, especially on the rather satisfying finish. In spite of its modern bulk, the wine was very decently balanced with a nice juiciness, so that it always reamined eminently drinkable. I actually rather liked this. Good for the short - medium term I would think. It was certainly drinking pretty well on the night.
