Introduction

A quiet dinner with a PN loving friend to compare a pair of Pinot Noirs from two very young California wineries who have gained immense popularity in a rather brief period of time. The wines paired wonderfully with an arugula salad with beets, thin bread mozzarella & basil pizza, herb crusted tuna and grilled fresh salmon. The only thing missing was a bowl of fresh cherries.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Decanted 2 ½ hr’s. Cherry and cinnamon nose with a band of vanilla. Big, dark cherry flavors with pomegranate along with a significant presence of dark asian spices, clove and vanillin oak. Plush, silky smooth tannins with a long, lingering, spice infused finish. Better integrated than a year ago, but still recommend decanting for 2 hr’s plus now and has many years left in the cellar.

  • 2003 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

No decant, but opened up nicely after an hour. Good nose of dark cherry with a hint of earth. Dominant flavor of dense, dark cherry with some earth and a nice touch of underbrush. Full mouthfeel, yet soft and very fine tannins throughout with spice increasing on the back of the palate leading to an elegant finish. Can be enjoyed now with 1 - 2 hr’s decant time, but should cellar well for several more years.
