Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1995 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Classically styled Bordeaux just entering its drinking window. Black fruit and spice on nose. Muscular wine with powerful black current flavors and bits of brown sugar and cocoa. Very elegant finish shows spice emerging again.

  • 2004 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Pale color. Good spice on the nose with partly faded fruit. Same profile on palate, with some emerging earthiness as well. While drinking nicely, this showed far too much age for a 7 year old 1er, even if it is from 2004.

  • 2004 Bernard Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Blind tasting. Clearly Burgundy right out of the gates. Very good black fruit aromas with savory spice and dried thyme. Same black cherry and blackberry on palate with great density and mouth feel that made me think it was Grand Cru. Clearly lots of oak which I thought was the source of trace bitterness on the finish. While that might be true, it might also have been the telltale "2004 green" character. But still good spice otherwise on finish. Really well done for the vintage, but not done well enough to buy it at $400.

  • 1966 Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

At first nose showed mostly tea and earth, but really picked up great rose petal aromatics within 5 minutes, and the earthy notes became richer and more mushroomy. Flavors were all about charming spice, dried and candied red fruit and naturally that same mushroom character. Really good acidity made this more charming by keeping the flavors bright. Seemed to pick up weight and more flavor for about 15 minutes, then plateaued for another 10-15 minutes, then started a 15 minute decline to no-longer-interesting.

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 82 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Double blind tasting side by side with the its 2006 counterpart. Clearly Burgundy, but after that i found it impossible to figure out these two bottles when we were told they were either same producer/vineyard or same vintage. These wines seems styles and miles apart. When told they were from Cote de Beaune, I said this tasted like Pommard and the other like Volany. This 2003 came across as a modern styled wine (ok, so that's from 2003) that was almost New World with more cherry cola than anything else. Black fruit with big tannins and roasted spice. Not fun for me at all.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Double blind tasting side by side with the its 2003 counterpart. Clearly Burgundy, but after that i found it impossible to figure out these two bottles when we were told they were either same producer/vineyard or same vintage. These wines seems styles and miles apart. When told they were from Cote de Beaune, I said this tasted like Volnay and the other like Pommard. Light red fruit with nice dried herb and spice on both nose and palate. clearly very young and primary but at the same time light and approachable. Once we know producer and vineyard, I interpreted that to thinking this was from 2007. While a nice wine and probably a good value, I would have expected a bit more from a Jadot 2006 1er.

  • 2002 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

After tasting this wine's 2003 and 2006 counterparts, I was relieved by the quality of the 2002. Bright red fruit on nose and palate with lots of energy and spice. Some really good Pommard power and density on the finish.

  • 1999 Saint Cosme Côte-Rôtie 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very intense (albeit rather ripe) black fruit to start but the fruit mellowed out a bit after 10 or 15 minutes. Lots of spice but not the overt level of black pepper I'd consider classic Cote Rotie. Big tannins and acidity, which also seemed to soften after about 15 minutes Still some unresolved oak which didn't go away.
