Floral nose, very elegant. Flavors start off accessible, then lots of energy and tension toward the middle, giving this wine the feeling of a "coiled spring" that will burst forth with power. Perhaps not quite as powerful as some older vintages I've tried, but still great spice and minerality from middle to finish.

Impressive floral nose with some anise and strawberry elements. Rose petal character and elegance follows through to the palate, where bright red fruit and subtle spice coordinate beautifully. Less powerful than I expected, this is a Barolo full of charm, but also lots of energy, tannins and minerality on long, clean finish.

Nose shows some trace floral elements as well as red fruit and emerging earthy character. Lighter than Clos des Ducs should normally show at this age, but still good spice and minerality. 2004's telltale green bitterness is faintly (but clearly) present from middle to end, and it's really hard to imagine it ever completely integrating, so I would most likely drink this young.

Dried rose petal aromas with dried cherry and some earth. Subtle spice. Subdued red cherry and berry, picking up steam on long finish. Needs 10+ years in the cellar.

Fruit driven aromas with lots of red and black cherry, supported with subtle spice and flowers. Fresh and powerful start, which continues through long finish, where some tobacco and licorice emerge. Very good now, great potential in 5+ years.

Dried red fruit with good floral notes. Not much spice on nose or palate. Fruit is again dried red cherry, slightly more delicate and restrained than I expected. Moderate length.

Dark berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Earthy mushroom hints starting to emerge. Moderate acidity and structure makes me think this will be best for the near- and medium-term. Intriguing perfumed note on finish. Very good now.

Lots of dark fruit everywhere with lots of powerful structure. Dense while elegant. Mid-90s point wine now with further upside from here. a few years away from the start of its peak drinking window.

Rich and ripe but with lots of leather and earth. Didn't provide any enjoyment today, at least not in context of the high quality flight in which it was served.

Dark fruit throughout with some rugged structure, but with the phenomenal balance of an elegant wine. Minerality and acidity really come through on long finish that I really like now.

Rich and ripe that today comes across as too fat and hot. Interesting potential, but not a wine I'd open now.

2003 Kongsgaard Chardonnay 93 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasting. WS#8. Rich, powerful, dense fruit. Lots of depth and character with sneaky mineral textures. Good finesse, particularly for now, but some heat on finish makes me think this best for the next couple of years.

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
(10/26/2007)
Tasting. WS#1. Rich perfumed start with ripe fruit and cherry liqueur. Bold and ripe fruit with very large scaled tannins that are in balance now but should be much better in a decade when a little softer.
