  • 2002 Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Millésime

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Carrying over the 2002 Champagne theme from a tasting today, this is how we chose to start the New Year's eve celebration. Pale and very alive. This bottle was absolutely consistent with past experiences-pure, light, fresh Chardonnay fruit, very dry, long, stony finish. Terrific! Wish I had more as it has not budged at all since its release a few years ago-will go on for a long while.

  • 2002 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Medium yellow. Candied lemon/orange peel. Dry, earthy, no oxidation whatsoever. Gorgeous texture. Wow, first time tasted in a year and what fantastic development. Since around 2009, this has veered away from its more exotic youth and provided a beautiful, dry Chenin Blanc experience.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Disgustingly corked. That is 2 out of 2 bottles so far, which means that I have not yet had a chance to put this much vaunted elixir to my lips.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Deep ruby. Even more exciting than a bottle this summer with a heady mix of black raspberry and garrigue. Not as marked by wood this time. Perfectly ripe fruit held in check by good acidity and a black licorice core. Wonderfully creamy texture. After the disappointment of the corked Janasse, this was a delight. OK, I'll admit that I usually lean to stricter reds, but it's alright to indulge every now and again. Fantastic Chateauneuf.

  • 1996 Château Soucherie Coteaux du Layon

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

Full yellow. High toned perfume and pure pear. Medium weight, exquisitely pure fruit, moderate sweetness, great acidity. Harmonious, lovely and long. This was amazingly similar to how it showed 3 years ago with very little in the way of evolution. Should hold at this wonderful plateau for years.
