Introduction

Stopped into Eno after a long day -- they basically bought Miller's recent inventory, so there's plenty to be had here, including a red flight with a Pinot, Grenache, and GSM. Winding down and not busy, so why not review/score?

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Miller Wine Works Pinot Noir Kendric Vineyard 88 Points

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Marin County

Have had countless better Pinots, but not a better one from Marin County. Likeable, but lacks a sense of place or familarity, which I guess makes sense for a still-esoteric wine region. Its best quality is texture -- it's quite silky, and has a smooth, substantial finish. The fruit isn't complicated -- mostly cherry -- and there's a really pervasive mushroom flavor which gives it some old world charm. Nothing profound here, but a nice wine, and gets an extra point for novelty.

  • 2008 Miller Wine Works Grenache Shannon Ridge Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County

Another uncomplicated Miller wine, but this one is slightly special. Consummate Grenache typicity -- fruit-forward, with chocolate-covered cherries throughout. Much better grip and structure than you'd expect from a CA Grenache fruit bomb, however, and the finish is just intense. Goes forever, and changes shape as it plays out. Starts out simple, but turns detailed towards the end. Also gets a point for novelty, as I haven't even heard of a single-vineyard Lake County Grenache, let alone had a remarkable one.
