Introduction

All flights except 3, decanted for 2 hours in the 55 degree cellar and then 4 and 5 for 1 hour at room temperature.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2000 Mederaño Ribera del Duero 80 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

I think I am harsh in my scoring tonight and this is probably an 85. Past it's prime with some light rose nose and brick brown in color. A short finish but tannins holding up nicely.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2001 Château Montrabech 85 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc

Slightly chalky on the nose which confused me initially. Light brown around the edge with moderate tannins but nor perfectly in balance between the acid and sugars.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Thelema Merlot Reserve 95 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

I am sure that this score will appear a little high and maybe it was the way the flight was arranged or just the timing from a decanting perspective. Green pepper and mushrooom on the nose with fruit underneath. Good medium tannins with a lovely long finish. Some clean cigar box on the nose too.

Flight 5 (1 Note)

  • 2005 Overgaauw Tria Corda - Centenary Vintage 92 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

This is still too young and it would be great to retaste in 2014. Very clean chalky terrior with a dry finish and hint of heat that needs to age. The dust together with the chalk is a little dark but not musty or wet.
