Introduction

Kevin Zraly and Jacques Lardiere tasting that explored the theme of aging and terroir with wines from Jadot owned vineyards. Great commentary from Jacques Lardiere who gave great insight into the tasting. This tasting gave me greater insight into the need to age Burgundy to appreciate its evolution. One really needs to taste and live with these wines over time. Pithy and entertaining comments from Kevin Zraly and great insight from Jacques Lardiere made this tasting stand out as well as trying these great wines.

Flight 1 - Corton Charlemagne (2 Notes)

This was the most interesting flight, since I never really had an older vintage of Corton Charlemagne. Really surprised at the evolution of the wine and its much more open and round flavors. I seem to be attracted to younger versions with more tension and minerality, but I have not had many that were aged.

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (6/14/2012)

(Kevin Zraly wine tasting with Jacques Lardiere) Very pretty perfumed nose of white flowers, white pepper, minerality, some spiciness. Concentrated. Typical nose of young CC. On taste minerality and acid come through with nice length. Really opens up with time.

  • 1999 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (6/14/2012)

(Kevin Zraly wine tasting with Jacques Lardiere) Closed nose at first, complex hints. On taste fruit driven with a bigger body than the 2009. Very good acidity but a bit flat on the palate. Needed time to open up which it did a few hours into the tasting. The taste become more round on the palate. Very elegant. Long finish.

Flight 2 - Clos de Ursules (4 Notes)

I tried the 88 before and was glad to confirm my previous tasting.

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    (6/14/2012)

(Kevin Zraly wine tasting with Jacques Lardiere) Closed nose, some cherry, more primary. On taste very tannic, light fruit, un-balanced. Some minerality, white pepper, awkward. Someone said it was drinkable now but I would disagree. This really needs lots of time to be ready to drink. Only open for educational purposes.

  • 2001 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    (6/14/2012)

(Kevin Zraly wine tasting with Jacques Lardiere) Much more open nose than the 09. Really comes out with secondary characteristics. Cherry, spice, on taste but the tannins really kick in on the finish. Acidic and high toned. More approachable than the 09 but nowhere near ready for consumption

  • 1988 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    (6/14/2012)

(Kevin Zraly wine tasting with Jacques Lardiere) Very similar notes to my previous tasting of this vintage. More Raspberry on the nose, cherry much more open than the 01 or 09. Great fruit and secondary flavors on taste. A bit of spice, tannins - although smoothed out you can still feel them. Really opens up with time. Mature and tasty.

    (6/16/2012)

(Kevin Zraly wine tasting with Jacques Lardiere) Very similar notes to my previous tasting of this vintage. More Raspberry on the nose, cherry much more open than the 01 or 09. Great fruit and secondary flavors on taste. A bit of spice, tannins - although smoothed out you can still feel them. Really opens up with time. Mature and tasty.
This showed a bit better than previous version - could be storage issues on the one I had previously.

Flight 3 - Clos de Vougeot (5 Notes)

Nice range and evolution of Clos Vougeot. The 94 gave a very nice insight into the wine.

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    (6/16/2012)

(Kevin Zraly and Jacques Lardiere tasting) This was difficult to evaluate. The nose was spectacular - a bit whorish with the fruit. Red Raspberry, blackberry on the nose in spades. A hint of spice but the fruit really wafted from the bowl. On taste very awkward with tannins on the front of the palate, very light nuances with fruit notes, a bit of "white pepper", long finish with lots of tannins. Way too young to drink. Open this for education only since this is not ready at all and need lots of time to show. Lots of fruit, medium acid, lots of tannin, ...

  • 2008 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    (6/16/2012)

(Kevin Zraly and Jacques Lardiere tasting) This was similar to the 09 on the nose, although with more mineral and spice hints. Seemed a bit subtler, but the fruit really came through. Red raspberry, black raspberry on the nose. On taste more balance with good minerality. This had a very long finish with the tannins kicking in at the end. This also needs lots more time. Would not touch this for years as well.

  • 2007 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    (6/16/2012)

(Kevin Zraly and Jacques Lardiere tasting) This had a much more closed nose than the 2009 or 2008. Very good balance with the flavors and tannins but with more acidity than the others. A very nice balanced long finish with good flavors on the mid-palate. This is shaping up nicely. Others liked it, but I thought it needed lots more time as well. Found it still a bit unbalanced and not ready for a wine of this breeding.

  • 1994 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot 81 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    (6/16/2012)

(Kevin Zraly and Jacques Lardiere tasting) This is where points don't matter. I know this is going dead but it is fascinating to taste and just smell and taste the essence of what was there in a Clos Vougeot. Jacques said it right when comparing to the perfumers' use of fondement. On the nose the autumnal notes are here in spades, forest floor, mushroom, but just the hints. A very mature nose, not much fruit, mature, elegantly aging, with the hints of what it was. Very interesting to taste - especially since this was one of the worst vintages in recent times. It does open up with time and there is enjoyment to taste as the odors slowly gather as it sits in the glass. Very interesting although not a bottle one should pursue.

  • 1991 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    (6/16/2012)

(Kevin Zraly and Jacques Lardiere tasting) Unlike the 94 the perfumed aromas had more intensity. Autumnal notes, sous-bois, mushrooms, raspberry and blackberry notes. On taste raspberry flavours, with maturity, but very nice and elegant flavors - lighter intensity that young wines but good depth and length to the flavors. Excellent balance. Very enjoyable but I still preferred the 88 Ursules. I perhaps enjoy the southern Cote d'Or more.

Closing

It was great to hear and learn from Jacques Lardiere for these few hours. Great insight and information that makes one appreciate the nuance and difficulty of Bourgogne. It is also easy to appreciate the wines of Burgundy when guided by people with experience. It was great to hear from Jacques Lardiere before his retirement. Avec plaisir!
