A private lunch

Buçaco Palace Hotel

Introduction

A very private lunch on the terrace of an almost deserted Buçaco Palaco Hotel. Johan Cruijff did show up however and we took a pic of him together with my father-in-law.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1991 Alexandre d'Almeida Buçaco Branco Reservado 90 Points

    Portugal

Medium straw yellow, not very deep; lovely nose, waxy and peachy, citrus and spice, depth and warmth; on the palate quite light and elegant, calm and classical, smooth acidity, old-fashioned but lively; lovely length. Drinking well.

  • 1985 Alexandre d'Almeida Buçaco Branco Reservado 93 Points

    Portugal

Compared to the 1991 clearly a step up in quality in every respect, more evolution too; full yellow with a hint of gold; warm nose, golden grapes, not even a hint of oxidation; on the palate powerful but full of finesse, clearly more acidity and length than the 1991. A classical beauty. Now - 2010.

    Portugal

A fascinating wine, an old nobleman who bears his age with grace and a straight spine. Completely mature appearance; incredible nose of eucalyptus, mediterranean herbs and cedar, reminiscent of dry Vintage Port (Dow 1927 or 1934 come to mind), deep and smooth, "gradevole", wonderfully harmonious, slight sweetness, elegant and stylish, richly textured, firm tannins, well-rounded; excellent length. Fascinating and sublime. Clearly proves that wine is more than fysiological ripeness, levels of extract and barriques; great wine has a spiritual dimension, a magic that can be experienced but never understood or analysed. That is the essence.
