Dark color. Lots of wood evident and like an essence of black licorice in the mouth. Just short of being syrupy, but still, not at all a style I enjoy.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Medium core, lighter rim. Classic mix of red fruit, spice and garrigue. Open, relatively lacy (especially after the ponderous Mordoree), complex and good inner mouth fragrance. Savory, excellent acidity and altogether really good. My favorite red wine today.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very dark and impenetrable. Thick and lush, but thankfully, not overripe. Combination of concentrated black cherry, olive and tobacco in reasonably complex package. Not overblown and pruny like the '07. Long tannic finish.
Dark purple. Backward nose of blackberry confit. Medium weight, some wood that becomes more obvious on the finish. Adequate acidity and slightly drying tannins. Clean and good, but it seems a bit without soul and lacks that distinctive Cornas character.
Medium color. Reddish fruit and menthol. Elegant, light and dry with more weedy, green herbs than fruit on the palate. Dry finish. Understated but good. Much more traditional Syrah than the Durand.

Medium color. Somewhat generic, bland black fruit on the nose and palate. Medium to lighter weight. A dash of herbs. Not bad for the price.

Medium red. Spicy red berry fruit. Lively, ripe fruit without undue sugar, black olive and tobacco finish. Stylish, complex and drinking well young.

2007 Ortas / Cave de Rasteau Rasteau Signature Vin Doux Naturel
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Rasteau
Deep center. Porty and full of figs. Sweet but enough acidity to not seem either heavy or hot. Good-would be a nice complement to chocolate.
