Introduction

Our Chicago Burgundy tasting group (the Lieu-Dit Cru) met last night at Carlos, using a slightly different format than usual. Wines were served blind, identified only by a vintage range.

Flight 1 - Champagne to Start (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Blind Whites (2 Notes)

  • 1992 Marcassin Chardonnay Gauer Upper Barn 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

Tasted blind. Okay, it's not Burgundy or Burgundian in any way but this wine showed incredibly well. It is not even close to being tired or faded. Rich and elegant, with a great length. Showed some sweetness both from ripe fruit and new oak but this was balanced, lively and exciting. 93 points.

  • 1992 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Showing a hint of age on the nose. Very good fruit remains rich on the palate, but without the length or nuance I would hope for. Very good minerality and acidity provide energy on finish. Others liked this better than I did tonight. Drink up if you own this.

Flight 3 - Older Flight (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - Second Red Flight (2 Notes)

  • 1988 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Blind tasting. Showed great balance from the start - good acidity, integrated tannins, some nice remaining fruit. Fruit was very red cherry and strawberry, not lost behind the wine's structure. Elegant long finish. Another good showing for a 1988 emerging from its long-term shell. My WOTN.

  • 1988 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Good color. I was surprised to see this was also from 1988 given it that it was showing more fruit and less acidity than the Dujac. Good fruit but still showing new oak. Nice overall, but just a moderate finish. This wine has pleny of life ahead of it. 89-90 points.

Flight 5 - An "Accidental" Richebourg Flight (3 Notes)

Three people brought younger Richebourgs, as we uncovered late into the evening. Was it coincidence or good Burgundy karma?

  • 2002 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Intensely floral start. Bright fruit aromas with a rich, fat character. Lots of red fruit start-to-finish. Not close to shut down for now. Lots of structure, but nothing protrudes. Great length.

  • 1997 Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Tasted blind. I was quite surprised to learn this was a '97 after guessing '96 or '99 because of the size, structure and acidity. Good fruit with hints of spice and pepper. Lots of structure and finesse. I wish it had a longer finish but think another 5 years in bottle will provide more integration and character. 91 points.

  • 2000 Domaine Leroy Richebourg 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Tasted blind. The most difficult wine of the tasting. Given how closed it was last night, I guessed it was from between 1999 and 2001 (thinking it one or the other), however never would have imagined it was a 2000. Dark floral nose came out reluctantly with lots of air. Fruit hidden for now behind big sweet tannic structure. Cinnamon and spice showed on finish. I wouldn't open this until 2015 or later. 88 points for now, 90-92 points for the future. Give to 2015 or later.
