Introduction

I seem to taste a few Oregon wines every 5 to 10 years. Once again, the time had come, and once again, I won't be rushing back to try more. For whatever reason, the wines have never really resonated with me (at least based on the small sample I've had).

Flight 1 - Rose (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Reds (7 Notes)

  • 2010 Haden Fig Pinot Noir No. 52

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Rose colored. Light weight, earthy and very little discernible fruit. Then a strange mocha quality at the end-wood?

  • 2010 McKinlay Pinot Noir

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Very pale. Light weight, tart strawberry with good acidity. For its initial almost weightless impression, pretty admirable earth, sap and texture. Well made, pleasingly balanced wine.

  • 2011 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium to light color. Bright cherry and some toasty oak on the nose. Simple and monochromatic. Although weightier than any of the wines that preceded it, oddly, more disjointed feel rather than any lushness with a tart, raspy finish. I really didn't care for this.

  • 2010 Cooper Mountain Vineyards Pinot Noir Reserve

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Light color. Reduced, sulfury nose. Light, tart cherry fruit with a clipped finish. Not harmonious at all, although it may be a difficult time to taste this.

  • 2010 Haden Fig Pinot Noir Cancilla Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Light ruby. Subtle dried fruit and light char on the nose. Light weight but nice feel, pure red fruit. Significant toast on the finish. Very good and probably my favorite wine of the flight.

  • 2010 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Light color. Promising, sinuous Pinot scents. Again, light but smooth texture from wood. After the inviting aromatics, this just completely fell short in the mouth with a touch of wood and otherwise neutral flavors. I don't get it. There should be more here.

  • 2010 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir La Bohème

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Pale red. Forward fruit and the most obviously ripe style with that cola component that one often finds in California Pinots. Some black cherry, some wood, adequate acidity. Easygoing wine for early drinking in a New World style.
