Introduction

Great tasting of the Right Bank. Clear winner tonight with the Pavie Decesse 2000. The 2003 Pavie didn't get too many votes and is just really young. Revisit this in a decade. Good times!

The 2005 Pavie Decesse needs some serious time and I instructed everyone to leave it in the glass over the course of the night and it helped a lot. Next time we will do Pomerol.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Philippe Prié Champagne Tradition Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Nice everyday Champagne with lemon, minerals and dough notes. Shell quality emerges on the palate. Good acidity. $24 a good buy.

  • 2005 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Decanted about an hour. I would not advise decanting much more as it was open for business. Red currants, earth, mild spices and tobacco. Medium finish and a balanced effort. This wine fell apart in the glass later in the evening and out of the bottle not good. Rated 92 on first impressions but if over decanted I would put it in the 87 range. Drink now through 2014.

  • 2005 Château Pavie Decesse 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Decanted ten hours and it needed every minute of that. 3 times through Mr. Vinturi. In the glass it opened up an hour in to the tasting. Blackberries, chocolate, oak and coffee beans. Complex on the palate once it opened for business. Medium to long finish and quite young and tannic. A lot of potential and this should improve with age in about ten plus years. 94-96.

  • 2005 Château Monbousquet 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Very nice nose but the palate falls a bit short otherwise a much better score. Blackberries, tar, oak smoke and funk. The wine changed a bit throughout the night and ended a bit disappointing with a clay like quality on the finish. This should benefit from some age. Decanted 2 hours and 2 Vinturi.

  • 2005 Château Pierre de Lune 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Wonderful nose of perfume, blueberries, roses and minerals. Palate is a bit shut down and this wine will benefit from more aging. Decanted 1.5 hours.

  • 2000 Château Pavie Decesse 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

My wine of the night with sweet fruits, blueberries, minerals, wood and vanilla notes. On the palate it picks up some chocolate ad raspberries. A complex wine and it needed all of the 4 plus hours decanting time to open up and show its stuff. Still firm tannins and this should drink well over the next 20 years. 94 to 98.

  • 2000 Château Troplong Mondot 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Beautiful wine and elegant. Classic Right Banker with coffee, rose petals, minerals and subtle spices. On the palate very rustic wine and offers some sour cherries. Medium and flavorful finish that screams balance. Drink this over the next 2 decades. Decanted 2 plus hours.

  • 2003 Château Pavie 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Wonderful out of the bottle into the decanter. Licorice, spices, cigar, clove and dust. Finishing the last pour over the course of 3 hours. Complex wine and super age worthy. No doubt this will continue to evolve. Nice earth quality on the finish and long. Decanted 3 hours and 2 vinturi.
