Introduction

A risk and unfortunately did not pay off well.
The guys at Roberson came across this set of 64 Barolos and organsed a tasting with a lot of disclamers on quality. Unfortunately many of the wines were gone.

The wines were decanted for 1 - 1.5 hours but we would suggest very little decanting of these wines as they are very fragile.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1964 Luigi Bosca Barolo Riserva Speciale Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Orange, cloudy and badly maderised.

  • 1964 Giuseppe Contratto Barolo 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

We would suggest as little decanting as possible, just to remove sediment as this is a fragile wine.
Still a decent amount of colour, red with brick tint. Light and fragile nose but with decent amount of fruit, a touch of iron/oxidation (to be expected in a way). Savoury, mushroom, earthy on the palate, elegant and with decent life in it but definitely past its best days. Thin on the mid palate. Still very good showing. (Andreas 90, Nicol 85) 88 avg. • 1964 Casa Vinícola Nicolello Barolo Riserva Speciale 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Quite dark in colour, especially give the age.Still so much fruit here! Mild on the nose yet attractive and a surprise at this age to have a level of sweet core and fruit. On the palate the fruit is present still albeit light, definitely feels younger than it is and has a good palate presence. Light on the finish but a very good showing! 91
Avoid decanting other than to remove sediment.

  • 1964 Pio Cesare Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Copper in colour, light, touch of sweetness on the nose and oxidation that pointed towards maderisation but we were not convinced is this is an issue of flaw or just a bad wine.

  • 1964 Villadoria Barolo Riserva Speciale 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The wine in the sack! Photo added too.
Quite a bit of colour for a 64 and seems to be a characteristic of the vintage (for bottles still alive that is and un affected by oxidation). Brown rim. An intense nose with a touch of something foul though in the background. On the palate it is better with good presence, good fruit for the age. Unfortunately there is a bit too much of sweetness here with spoils the balance but definitely better on the palate than on the nose. 86 and old.

  • 1964 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Very maderised unfortunately.
A bit of trivia though... Apparently Ratti is quoted on his website saying that it all started in 1965 when he moved to Barolo yet here we have a 1964 that he also mentions as his first wine released. Maybe residual wine in the vats when he bought the domain or just another little wine mystery. Photo added for proof :)

  • 1964 Voerzio Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Light red in colour. Nose full of oxidation and the wine unfortunately is long gone.
This is from a time before the split of the Voerzio domain in the early 1980s , to Gianni and Roberto, and this was probably made by Giacomo Voerzio.

  • 1964 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Red in colour and seems alive, but unfortunately the nose tells a story of oxidation and sweet reminants of maderisation. Shame. Added the photo at least...

  • 1964 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This is the same wine as the one bottled under Giacomo Conterno as this was made before the domaine split and shared 50/50 following the split.
Browinsh, light in colour, shows its age. Quite a bit of sweet scent on the nose, slight oxidation. Better on the palate, with good presence but the sweet core is here too.. Not a very good bottle so will not score.
