Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Had this again for NYE this year, and it showed me just how much wine I've tasted and how my palate has evolved :) Still a really good bottle, but very young and it doesn't stand up to the couple bottles of '90 DP I've had recently. Disgorgement date on this was November 2011.

Where the DPs I find to be very nutty and earthy, this is bright and fruity. I mainly get a lot of apple in the nose and palate, pears, very tart, strong acidity.

I'm interested to lay a bottle of this down and see what happens in a decade!

  • 2003 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Another great bottle of this wine. Decanted for 8 hours, but this note is on what little leftovers there were this morning!

There are notes in this wine that I still have trouble putting my finger on...still get portlike notes, some molasses, and something here makes me think of Rye or Pumpernickel bread or something, but then I get a tart kiwi fruit kind of aroma too.

All kinds of things going on in this wine, excellent juice, and drinking beautifully now.

  • 2008 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Nysa Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

From a Magnum, this note is on leftovers the next morning, so it's been open for about 24 hours at this point. 13.7% ABV

Bright red cherries, hints of earthy funk, but not a whole lot of complexity. Finish is pretty short. Not sure if this is going to evolve much more, but it's a good bottle of wine.

  • 2006 Sine Qua Non Syrah Raven Series 96 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

This was decanted for 10+ hours, and the leftovers rebottled overnight. TN done on the leftovers this morning. 15.5% ABV

An outstanding bottle of wine as always. Blackberry, blueberry, eucalyptus, meat, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and more...tons of aromas and flavors to find in here :) Silky smooth but grippy tannins, nice acidity, almost like tart green apple.

Drinking quite well now, but certainly quite a bit of life left in it.

  • 2009 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Decanted for 10 hours before drinking, rebottled overnight. This note is on the leftovers the next morning. 14.5% ABV

I still think this is an outstanding wine. It just strikes me as a pure expression of Cabernet. Seamless, aromatic, complex. Tannins are still pretty big, and will definitely age well.

This really needs the long decant, or forget about it for another four or five years.
