Introduction

Several of the regulars gathered in the shop for some NCAA tourney basketball, interesting wines, and general debauchery.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2007 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly

From Magnum. Ethereal, perfumed nose of dried violets, wild strawberries, and tart raspberry. Medium bodied, lithe, and energetic red fruited palate backed by wonderful chalky minerals and spice. Tart cranberry, subtle earth, and a bit of tobacco persist on the medium length finish. Great bottle, and just starting to show some secondary characteristics. Drink or Hold. R&M89

  • 2007 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3.14 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

The nose is a cocktail of minerals, raspberry compote, potpourri, and pronounced cedar. The palate is rich and red fruited, with underlying complex spice. The finish is filled with dense vanilla and dark berries framed by fine grained tannins. This certainly an atypical beaujolais, but then again, that appears to be the point. We were left, however, looking for a bit more acid and freshness. Perhaps this is closed down? R&M87

  • 2010 Domaine Tortochot Gevrey-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Deep, robust aromas of briary cherries, damp earth, and peppered game. The medium-full bodied palate carries a gorgeous contrasting balance of rich mixed berry fruit, sanguine/game savory tones, and sous bois. The finish is linear and focused by tart cherry fruit and herbs. Great acidity, balance, and value. Drink or Hold. R&M91

  • 2009 Pierre-Marie Chermette Fleurie Les Garants 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Deep, complex nose of dark cherries, lavender, sea spray, and fallen pine. This is wonderfully textured and medium bodied, boasting gorgeous ripe blackberries backed by wet slate, fallen, leaves and drying tannins. The long finish excites with sweet dried berries, licorice, and cinnamon. Gorgeous and wide open, with the stuffing to last. Drink or Hold. R&M90

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Fantastic, vivid nose of tart strawberry, mint, basil, morning dew, and crushed sea shell. The wonderfully focused palate carries tart raspberry, strawberry, cucumber, and rhubarb with its mineral spine of sea spray and slate. The long finish adds dried rose petal, mint, and orange zest. This is a stunning, medium bodied rose. Drink or Hold. R&M91

  • 2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot 90 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Lifted aromas of spicy black cherry, peppered game, soil, and leather. The palate is wonderfully spicy, as red cherry, roasted green peppers, and black pepper meld with tobacco and sanguine game. The finish has excellent acidity, lending direction to mixed berries, game, and dried herbs. This is drinking well now, but will reward further with time in the cellar. Hold. R&M90

  • 2010 Jacques Puffeney Poulsard Arbois 88 Points

    France, Jura, Arbois

Very complex nose of wild raspberry, sundried tomato, herbs de provence, and dried flowers. The palate is energetic and tightly wound, with stoney minerals and oxidized tart red berries. The finish is long and constantly changing, as mingling rosehip, violets, orange zest, and tart red berries appear. This has a specific style, very linear and directed. There is, however, great promise for the future. Hold. R&M88+

  • 2010 Eric Texier Côtes du Rhône-Brézème Vieille Serine Domaine de Pergaud 86 Points

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône-Brézème

Powerful nose of cassis compote, black pepper, tart blackberry, loam, and game. The medium bodied palate is similar, contrasting ripe black cherries with peppered game and broth. Finish adds a bit of complexity, with arising wood, licorice, and dried herbs. Well made and drinking well, though perhaps a bit standard. R&M86

  • 2011 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly

The nose is somewhat closed but nevertheless reveals brambly mixed red berries, mushroom, and purple florals. High-toned palate mixed berry palate, with spice and tones of forest floor. The medium length finish features tart red fruit, herbs, and chalk minerality. This is very good, but needs some time in the bottle to shed a bit of fruit. Hold. R&M88

  • 2009 Daniel Bouland Morgon Corcelette 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Rich aromas of plum, dark cherry, and chalk. Medium-full bodied, brooding palate of ripe mixed berries and expansive minerality. Long, gorgeous finish of black tea, sweet dried berries, and spicy florals. This is very good now, but will really shine as it continues to shed some fruit. R&M90+
