Father's Day 2013 Chardonnay

Introduction

With a seafood lunch on the menu (1st of Sept is the first day of Spring in Australia), the sun shining and a trip to the Fish Markets at Pyrmont a perfect opportunity for an Australian chardonnay tasting. Having a young cellar by comparison, I chose my oldest Chardonnays with a view to confirming if I was on the right track. The three Chardonnays chosen were;

2007 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Margaret River WA
2008 Savaterre Beechworth Vic and
2009 Pierro Margaret River WA

For the Sydney Rock oysters, a bottle of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs.

  • 2007 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 94 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    30 min decant.
    Translucent pale gold similar colour to the 2009 Pierro as opposed to the rolled gold of the 2008 Savaterre.
    Most aromatic of the three, nose of pears, vanilla, oranges white stone fruits and subdued citrus.
    Fresh citrus up front, white stone fruits, then a tangy mid palate with light freshening acidity and a wonderful long mouth filling finish.

  • 2008 Savaterre Chardonnay 92 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

    30 min decant.
    Golden yellow in colour.
    Nose of fresh citrus, lemons, flowers, vanilla and light perfumed fragrance.
    Smooth buttery notes up front, subdued tang mid palate, toasty, before a medium finish with a little zest. Nice mouthfeel.

    Opened another bottle a few days ago which went very well with a few Frenchy cheeses, aged cloth cheddar, pâté, Australian Kalamata olives in balsamic and Jamon Serrano.

  • 2009 Pierro Chardonnay Margaret River 91 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    Will rewrite this note at a later date.
    Given the performance of the Leeuwin and Savaterre left this wine in their wake, and this was also the youngest wine of the three.

Closing

Really enjoyed the Leeuwin at lunch today. It was both a standout as well integrated and as an accompaniment to the menu.
No rewrite of my Savaterre note from the previous tasting, as it was accurate and being outshone by the Leeuwin I reflected that in the rating.

The colour of the Savaterre would suggest it has aged more quickly than the Leeuwin and a shorter drinking window would be appropriate.

The Pierro would do with a further tasting note and time in the cellar before I would add any more bottles to the vintages '09, '10 and '11 in the racks.
