Introduction

Great tasting in our little private circle. The topic was Barolo which is one of my favorite wines.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1989 Gaja Barbaresco 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Colour: The most youthful in colour, dark cherry red.
Nose: Rose petal, sweet balsamic vinegar, red berries, a bit of cassis, malt and underbrush.
Palate: A great symbiosis of elegance and power. Med-acidity, med-finish. Gets better with some time in the glass and air. Still a lot of potential left.

  • 1990 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Colour: Light colour, watery on the rim.
Nose: Dried red berries, underbrush, dried flowers, licorice and a balsamic note.
Palate: Maybe the most elegant wine of the tasting. Seamless, nothing qualms stands out. Sour cherry and a hint of licorice again. Wonderful length. Maybe the biggest surprise in this tasting for me.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Colour: Translucent blood red.
Nose: Smells young, sweet little red berries such as raspberry or red cherry alongside rose patel (typical for Barolo), a hint of mushrooms and underbrush.
Palate: Very charming wine, silky with a med-acidity, long on the finish, still some tannins & potenital left.

  • 1989 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 99 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Colour: Dark, ocherous colour with just a little brightening on the rims.
Nose: What a complex, funky and challenging nose this is! Nearly no fruit instead aromas of lovage, sea salt, walnut shell, iodine, sherry, nuts, licorice, meat, tar and ash waft from the glass. Very divisive, not everyone on the table loved the nose as much as I did.
Palate: Super lively acidity, tannins are still left. By far the most powerful wine of the night. Incredible tension & pressure on the mid-palate. Cold smoke, leather and again an "animal" component. Extremely long finish, last for minutes. And still so unbelievable young, you could cellar this wine for more than 10 years.

At this stage, this is a perfect wine for me. No more words to add.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1953 Gaja Barbaresco Vecchia Riserva 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Colour: Almost transparent in colour. Never seen a wine like this before. Looking like a Rose, not like a red wine.
Nose: No more fruit aromas left, only tertiary aromas like mushrooms, underbrush, a bit of sherry and nuts.
Palate: The acidity ist still there, unbelievable when you see this colour. Med-bodied and med-finish. But a lack of power on the mid-palate, no wonder after all this time.

  • 1971 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Speciale 98 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Colour: Still a strong, dark, ocherous colour. A bit like motor oil.
Nose: Just WOW! Still some red fruit left then notes of cardamom, spice, dried flowers, licorice, leather, just a hint of wild honey and a balsamic component. I could smell this wine for days.
Palate: Sour cherry and licorice comes to mind. The acidity is still so youthful, tannins are almost fully integrated into the wine. Wonderful structured with enough power left but also so silky. Balance is the word. Very long finish.

I´m so thankful that we had such a extraordinary example of this wine. And there is so much potenital left. You can cellar it easily for 5-10 more years.

Closing

One of the best tasting I´ve ever had before. All the wines showed extremely well, no one was flawed, just a remarkable experience.
