Introduction

A delicious dinner with fine wines to say a fond farewell to Samson and congrats to his upcoming wine exploration trip across the globe.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1978 Château Pontet-Canet 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

An interesting oldy, light ruby looking claret with red fruit profile at the back. Mature bouquet of red cherry, prune, mushroom, damp earth and hint of gravel stone. Palate is rather lean and light, though acidity is nicely balance with cherry meat and tobacco notes. Quite a nice way to start off the dinner.

  • 1949 Antonio Ferrari Primitivo di Manduria Il 49 di Antonio Ferrari 88 Points

    Italy, Puglia, Primitivo di Manduria

Very interesting old Italian that none of us knew what to expect from it. The wine appears and tastes much younger than its actual age, with energy and richness. Nose is packed with tart, minerals, sulphide, hint of rubber, quite a powerful nose. The stated sulphide note is quite prominent on the palate, mixed in a bit of guava and wine-soaked glutinous rice. An interesting one.

  • 2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This bottle didn't open up like the last one did, perhaps due to the lack of decant (last bottle did get a 1.5 hour decant), only slow-ox for a handful of hours. Primary and tight, deep purple in color. Classic Paulliac aromatics filled with cassis, vanilla oak, lead pencil, white flowers, earth and truffle. Drinking is really the nicest part and you get a bright sensation from the tip of the tongue all the way down the throat, then the long aftertaste of cigar smoke and black cherry lingers warmly in your mouth. Brilliant palate, plush, creamy texture, loaded with black fruits, leather and tobacco leaf. Tannins are sweet, chewy and very fine. All aspects of this supremely made 2000 Pichon Baron is there, all it needs is some ageing time in the cellar.

  • 1996 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

What a beauty! From magnum and it's still young in its lifespan. With about 1 hour decant, beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers, cassis, white spice, minerals, lead pencil and some herbs, it softens all your senses, it's that good. Young palate, very solid and supremely balanced, fresh tobacco, mushroom and ripe black fruits. Tannins are plushy and coat your mouth with abundance. Scored only 95 point this time, because it's still young (from magnum) and with undeniable potential when it matures further.

  • 1999 Château Ausone 97 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Often it takes a special occasion to get a chance to taste a truly special wine. 1999 was a challenging vintage and inconsistent quality across the Bordeaux wineries, but the Ausone is a true star, instead of searching among words for praising, it maybe wise to use just one simple word - gorgeous.

The mesmerizing bouquet opens up with floral, blue and purple fruits, crushed stone and coffee, soft yet bright. Palate is nothing short of impeccable balance, expansive, velvety texture takes over all your imagination of a supreme wine. Deep, complex, and heart melting elixir. This is truly special...

  • 1986 Château Léoville Las Cases 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Solid dark ruby, looks younger than it's actual age. Perhaps lacking a proper decant, still rather tight on the nose and palate. Yet with extended air time in the glass, notes of tobacco, cassis, leather and spice are easy to spot. Solid structure, excellent balance, and tannis are still prominent. Certainly has a long life ahead and should get better.
