Introduction

Dinner with Melvyn and Kel. This was my first visit to the relocated and renamed Dezato - a good, if rather overpriced, way to end the busy day.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Paul Dethune Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

A very impressive NV, this was great for a Japanese meal. The nose was quite engaging, with earth, smoke and some mineral notes running beneath rich scents of bread, white fruit, a little suggestion of berry flesh, little smoke. The palate had a nice rich feel to it, with a fine, creamy mousse and a great balance backing up round appley flavours and just a hint of sweet strawberries haunting the midpalate. I was surprised to see 12.5% on the label given how full, even powerful the wine felt in the mouth. Good finish too, very generous on the backpalate, with a little bit of fruit lined with lithe notes of mineral and spice. A very nice NV.

  • 1996 Château Monbousquet 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Better than the last bottle I had, but still decently good rather than great. The nose was quite nice in a rather overtly modern way, with toasted vanilla scents and perfumy floral notes hovering around rich plummy tones, and then more classic St Emilion accents of earth, spice and smoky tobacco chasing behind. The palate was rather less than promised on the nose, showing a bit skinnier than one would normally expect from a Monbouquest. It was still quite substantial on the attackthough, with ripe flavours of plums and cassis trailing away into brighter sour plum notes towards the midpalate. Fine acidity and silky tannins then carried it into a surprisingly strong finish, with a little kiss of wood spice, anise and more vanilla. I liked the freshness on the wine and, with time, the tannins firmed up somewhat as well, suggesting that this could last quite a few more years in the bottle. That said, I do think this will be an earlier drinking wine, so better start popping them if you have a large stock.

  • 1990 Fattoria di Vetrice Pontassieve Vin Santo del Chianti Rùfina Villa Di Monte 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Rùfina

I do not have much experience with Vin Santi, so the rating may be a bit skewed, but I did enjoy this. When poured, it had a lovely orangey amber colour. The nose was ratehr Madeira-liked, showing slightly rancio, with notes of sultanas and figs, orange marmalade, dired dates and a whiff of walnuts with a slightly spicy chaser - very alluring. The palate was very nice too. Fresh, lively, yet nicely layered, at least on the attack, with sweet notes of orange marmalade, figs, then caramelised apples and sultanas. These were met with the slightly bittersweet twist of orange peel on the midpalate, then a long, nutty finish - chestnuts and walnuts I thought - with a little ring of spice. Mellow and complex, yet still very much alive, this was a surprisingly good pairing with Japanese miso soup. Nice.
