Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2010 Ojai Syrah White Hawk Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Dark violet, medium in color. Tight on the bouquet with aromas of cassis, olive and mesquite. Polished on the palate with nice acid and well balanced overall. Showing lots of primary blueberry and violets with subtle more savory notes. Light tannins and light on the finish. Needs time.

  • 2012 Tensley Syrah

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Very dark in color. Jammy on the nose, showing notes of sweet cherry, spice, dill and anise. Overripe blue fruit on the palate, with an odd accent of bitter anise and medicinal herb, along with sweet spice. Low acid, big tannin, and full on the finish.

  • 2008 Ampelos Syrah Gamma

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Garnet black color. Rich bouquet of black fruit, vanilla, cotton candy and cedar. More acid and balance on the palate than I expected, but still very big and ripe with lots of black fruit, cola, violet and cedary notes. Full round tannins, medium acid, low varietal character. Layered and polished throughout with a full finish. From SRH, but not a cool climate style.

  • 2011 Alban Vineyards Syrah Patrina Alban Estate Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

WOTF. Garnet black color. Aromas of cracked pepper, mineral, cassis, anise, dried floral, and grilled meat. Beautifully layered and polished on the palate with notes of black tea, olive, cherry, meats, violets, lavender and spice- seamless. Very fine polished tannin with good acid balance and great depth on the finish. Great finesse. A striking Syrah.

  • 2011 Sine Qua Non Syrah Dark Blossom

    USA, California, Central Coast

Decanted. Black violet color. Aromas of cedar, vanilla, dill, violets, cassis and cherry. Nicely polished and layered on the palate with juicy blueberry, cracked pepper, dried herb, tea and spice. Nicely balanced with big polished tannin and good acid balance. Nice depth, and a big overall finish. Didn't quite live up to the Alban 2011 Patrina in this tasting, but should be a great ager.
