Introduction

French-Swedish niche importer Martin a.k.a. Caviste invited to a tasting of three wines from a new producer from Côte de Beaune, Le Grappin. It's both new in Martin's range and a newly established producer run by Andrew Nielsen. The first vintage was 2011, and we tasted one 2011 (out of two produced) and two 2012s (out of three produced).

Le Grappin's style seems to go in the elegant and slightly firm direction. The two red 2012s gave a cool impression for the vintage, which tend to show much more ripe character than the red 2011s. This is an excellnt effort by Andrew Nielsen since we are talking about the first or second vintage of the different wines! I might have been a bit ungenerous in my scoring, so those that like their Burgundies pure and firm can safely add +1 point to the score.

Flight 1 - Le Grappin wines (3 Notes)

  • 2011 Le Grappin Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Nose with ripe yellow apples, pears, some peaches, hints of honey, a faint buttery note, and well-integrated oak. Palate with prominent citrus notes, pears, apple, high acidity, mineral, and mint. Definitely citrus-dominated, a pure and fresh style, young but approachable now, 88(+) p.

  • 2012 Le Grappin Savigny-lès-Beaune 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Nose with ripe cherries, some flowery notes as well as discrete liquorice. I like the nose, which I find rather typical for 2012 red Burgundies and it indicates rather good ripeness. Medium body, palate with cherries, cranberries, some red apples, high acidity that gives a slightly “tart” impression, and medium tannins. Gives a much cooler impression on the palate than in the nose. Young palate, could probably benefit from some cellaring, and already a year in the cellar could probably do some difference here. 87+ p.
A wine from the village-level vineyard site "Aux Fourneaux".

  • 2012 Le Grappin Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Nose with ripe strawberries, cherries, spices, balanced oak notes, and just a touch of “traditional Pinot notes” including animal notes. The palate is medium bodied(+) with fine concentration of fruit, ripe strawberries, good acidity, mineral, spices, medium tannins of a polished type, and has a fresh aftertaste. More generous and somewhat “friendlier” fruit than the 2012 red Savigny village, as well as a bit more polish, but also here a rather cool impression, and balance. Rather young, 89+ p.

Flight 2 - Another white for comparison (1 Note)

We got to taste another 2011 white to have something to compare with. This Boillot white was a bit more spicy, apply, oaky and ready, and it made the Le Grappin white seem very citrus-dominated, and perhaps more pure and fresh by comparison.

  • 2011 Henri Boillot Saint-Aubin Blanc 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin

Nose with ripe apple, some smoke, some oak notes, somewhat spicy. Palate with apples, some citrus, spice, medium concentration of fruit, rather high acidity, some mineral. Rather ready to drink, 87 p.
