A big mixed bag of surprise wines.

  • 2011 Domaine Cornu Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasted oak, butter, and minerality. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of toasted oak, stony minerality, citrus lemon, and slight hint of ripe peach. Medium finish.
    Quite clearly a cool climate Chardonnay with a nice touch of oak.
    Good quality white Bourgogne. Nice to drink now. Unlikely to improve with further ageing.

  • 2011 Grace Winery Koshu Toriibira Vineyard 87 Points

    Tasted blind.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, almost colourless straw colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of brine, sea salt minerality, and sea shells. Youthful.
    On he palate, dry, medium acidity, medium- alcohol, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sea salt minerality and citrus lime. Medium finish.
    Acceptable quality. The strong mineral edge of this wine is interesting, but lacks the acidity to back it up. Drink up. Will not improve with further ageing.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Pinte Arbois 91 Points

    Aired in decanter for about an hour before drinking.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of sweet red cherry, strawberry, smokey incense, Chinese dried herbs. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, soft medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, Chinese herbs, and minerality. Medium+ finish.
    Very good quality. My first time trying a wine from Jura. An enjoyable elegant wine. Nice drinking now. I don't think this will improve much more with further ageing.

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, purple colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of stalks, stems, and green herbaceousness. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, rustic coarse medium+ tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of stalks, stems, herbaceousness, and some blackberry. Medium finish.
    Acceptable quality herbaceous Cabernet Franc. Not enough fruit character here. Drink up. Unlikely to improve much with further ageing.

    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of spice and slight barnyard and earth. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherry, sweet licorice, and spice. Medium finish.
    Acceptable quality easy drinking Côtes du Rhône. Drink up. Not for further ageing.

  • 2006 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker's Reserve 89 Points

    Tasted blind. Aired in decanter for about 1.5 hours before drinking.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of toasted oak, earth, blackcurrant and blackberries. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of toasted oak, blackcurrant, blackberries, plums, and slight earth. Long finish.
    Good quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Feels like a well-made technically sound wine, but lacking character. Still feels young now, and further ageing may reward. Maybe another 5 years.

  • 2012 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon 88 Points

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, purple colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of cedar wood, green herbs, and mint. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ tannins, full body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberry, minty green herbs, and chalky minerality. Medium+ finish.
    Acceptable quality Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. From rich Terra Rosa soil over limestone. May have small amount of Cabernet Franc added. Drinking fine now, may develop a bit more over the next 3+ years.

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of leather, earth, sour cherries, red plums. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, powdery dry high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, tomato, red plums, prunes, leather, earth. Long finish.
    Very good quality textbook Brunello. Firm and structured and has the stuffing to go for another 5 years at least. Showing a lot better than when I previously tried it on pop and pour.

  • 2006 Woodstock Botrytis Sémillon 94 Points

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured from a 375ml bottle.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, beautiful amber gold colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of botrytis, honey, orange peel, marmalade. Developing.
    On the palate, sweet, lovely high acidity, low alcohol, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with rich flavours of apricots, ripe kumquats, orange peel, marmalade, and minerality. Long finish.
    Outstanding quality. I actually thought this was an aged Sauternes! Better than the De Bortoli Noble One. I downed 2 glasses effortlessly. This could still go on for many years.
