Barolo Tasting for D. Renn's Birthday

We got 4 couples together to taste through some Barolos (non-blind) with a roasted rib-roast. All of the Barolo's were excellent. My WOTN was the Manzoni Vigna d'la Raoul - 1999. This really needed airtime to shine. I tasted this after 2 hours in the decanter and it was pretty flat. With a few more hours of air though it took off and was delicious. I picked up a few mixed cases from this producer in 2011/2012 due to the importers stock liquidation and I should have picked up a case of this wine alone!

I had two #2's The Palladino (2008) and the 2004 Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc. I was really surprised at how well the 2008's were drinking given was not the "vintage of the decade." The 2010 Barbaresco showed poorly but that could
have been a result of the competition!

I had never heard of the Palladino producer and really enjoyed a wine from this producer. Atlantic Wine in Atlanta, GA was the source for this bottle. Overall a great night. Thanks to the Renn's for hosting.

• 2008 Parusso Barolo Bussia 92 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Served non blind and wine was decanted for several hours. Medium red color with no sediment. On nose, big fruit but a pretty muted nose. On palate, dark cherry fruit, slightly medicinal & menthol. Pretty modern profile (or the vintage) with full body and long tannic finish. Very enjoyable. 92+

• 2008 Palladino Barolo Parafada 93 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Decanted 1 hour before tasting. Ready to go after about 30 minutes. Dark red color with no sediment. Some change in color from edge to center. Wonderful nose. Black cherry, sour cherry, menthol, tar - Classic Barolo. On palate, sour cherry, touch of tobacco with high acidity and huge tannins. Very long finish. Even with tannic grip, was fine to drink on it's own but even better with a Ribeye. My second favorite wine of the night and would buy if I saw this. 93+

• 2010 Reversanti Barbaresco 90 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  Decanted for several hours. Way too young. Very light color with no sediment. Oak/wood on nose with cherry / raspberry fruit profile. Medium body & medium acidity with nice tannic grip on medium length finish. Couldn't tell if showed poorly because of the competition, the age of the wine, or it's just an average wine. Not a rebuy. Did not take good notes on this one but wrote 91+. That score would reflect improvement in cellar given age - probably 89+ if rating today.

• 2004 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc 93 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Decanted 45 minutes before tasting - not enough and probably would score higher given proper decanting. Dark blackish red color without much sediment. Classic Barolo profile on nose & palate -didn't take good notes on this one - high acidity, stout tannins on the very long finish. Sour cherry / black cherry / dirt flavor profile on palate. 93+ tied for #2 wine of the night for me.

• 1999 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna d'la Roul 94 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Opened at 3pm, decanted at 4pm and poured back in bottle at ~ 6pm. Consumed over next 2-3 hours. Dark red color and throwing lots of sediment. On nose, rose petals / floral, tar, menthol, sour cherry. On palate, high acidity, sour cherry, cherry, black cherry fruit profile with medium+ body, well integrated tannins and a very long finish. If I had rated this after the 2 hour decant it would have been 91+. This really needed airtime and was the opposite of my note from 7/2013! Just entering peak drinking window. My favorite Barolo of the night.
