Introduction

57, give or take a few, Berserkers and Friends gathered at the Peking Duck House on 53rd in Manhattan for a periodic Bersekerfest. Organized by Brad Kane, there were Berserkers from both coasts, travelling from as far away as California and as close as my office, about a block and a half away.

  • 2006 Hospices de Beaune Corton-Cuvée Docteur Peste Faiveley (Hospices Auction Group) 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Decanted at 2:00 pm, poured back into the bottle at 6:30 pm. Brought to the restaurant and opened at about 7:30. Expressive red fruit nose with a bit of a floral component. The palate is tight, indicating a need for at least 5 more years in the bottle, probably more. I think I will give this as a belated wedding gift to someone married late last year and tell them to drink it on their tenth anniversary. There is a lot going on here, with dark red fruit, cedar (NOT OAK), and some herbal components, but I think patience is the key to this wine.

  • 1990 Vietti Barolo Brunate 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Do not know the decanting regimen. Ready to drink. Tannins seem fully resolved. earth, violets, forest mushrooms, some smooth saddle leather, red fruit. I do not think this is on the downslide, but I think it may get there soon, so drink up. very easy to drink. I could have polished off a lot of this all by myself.

  • 2013 Tercero Gewürztraminer The Outlier 90 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

    Unscrewed and poured, then closed after about three hours and brought home and retasted after two days without refrigeration. Very interesting wine. characteristic lychee nuts and some spice, but the roughness often found in Alsatian Gewurztraminer was missing, replaced by a floral component like a good light Riesling. Light and easy to drink but with plenty of flavor and complexity. Delicious.

  • 1977 Fonseca Porto Vintage 96 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    This was delicious port that I have had two or three times before. It is right at the sweet spot where it has shed all of its baby fat but had not been completely taken over by nutty caramel. There is still fruit to blend with the complexity that great port takes on with age. Bravo. I think that Jeff brought this, but whoever brought it deserves the thanks of everyone who tasted it.

  • 1990 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 92 Points

    From Magnum. I am not a Krug fan, but this was nice. Lacked the brioche yeasty component that I like, but had that laser-like sharpness of a Krug.

  • 2005 Sine Qua Non Pinot Noir Over & Out 96 Points

    This was my WOTN. Was it pinot? Who cares? It certain was not an SQN syrah or grenache. Elegant, sexy, soft and easy to drink with great red fruit and a floral component. No bite. ABV? I didn't notice. Light on its feet with no apparent oak. Anyone want to trade one of these for a more recent syrah or grenache? I've only been on the list for about 3 years.

  • 1996 Château Calon-Ségur 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    I think this was PnP. A very nice Bordeaux in the price of life. Dark red cherry fruit and smooth saddle leather with a bit of tobacco. Tannins fully resolved. Fruit is taking on a tiny bit of sweetness.

  • 2001 Mocali Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna delle Raunate 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Quite delicious. Popped and poured. Earthy with dark red fruit and some forest floor herbs and mushrooms. I know it makes no sense, but there's something about Italian terroir, or Italian winemaking technique, that shines through whether it's Sangiovese or Nebbiolo. I've noticed it when drinking blind, so I don't think it's mind over matter, and I noticed it here. Smooth. Ready to go. Reaching its peak plateau without gaining some of the classic characteristics of substantial age with that leathery component.
