Introduction

Both fantastic wines, and a fantastic night for Mother's Day with mom.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Kabinett 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Pale yellow; complex nose with petrol, lemon-lime, slight minerality; plate is fresh, slate minerality, fantastic acid; long tart finish. Very nice kabinett. 92

  • 1994 Joseph Phelps Insignia 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Deep ruby with very little bricking; nose wafted from the decanter during decanting, intense nose with blackberry, blackcurrant, lots of fruit, significant mint/menthol component in the glass; palate is full bodied, deep black fruits, very well integrated tannins; medium-long finish starts to fade on the fruits. An unapologetic California cab but classically made with slight mint/green that makes it interesting (but definitely not Bordeaux-like), fully mature now with integrated tannins (different from just a few years ago with my last bottle). As the fruit starts to fade, I don't think this will develop more complexity than it has now. 92-93
Update with dinner: just a new fantastic complexity on the nose with aromatic spice, fruit, great minty and green complexity but still in a Napa style. Superb wine at its peak. 94-95
