An evening in Tucson

A nice, low-key evening with good friends in Tucson. No theme - just some nice wines everybody brought and shared.

• 2003 Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

  Nose with slight oak and vanilla notes, with Lychees. On the palate, this is a bit oaky and buttery. Some minor acids. Fat. Some nice minerals underneath.

• 1992 Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Sonoma Mountain 93 Points

  Gorgeous and elegant nose, with great red fruits and some earthy notes. On the palate, this is elegant mountain fruit. Silky and pure. Only a touch of earthiness. Some silky tannins on the finish.

• 1999 Clusel-Roch Côte-Rôtie 93 Points

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

  Dark, smoky fruit on the nose, with bacon fat and violets. lovely, elegant wine, with silky fruit. Very dark, almost meaty fruit. Ripe. Over time, this exhibits much more perfume.

• 1995 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc 93 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Nose of spicy, red fruit, with cinnamon and cedar. On the palate, there's open bright fruits, with tannins that are only partly integrated, but to me don't stand in the way of enjoyment at all. Drinking quite well now, but will clearly improve with more time. Fairly ripe overall. The oak is nicely integrated.

• 2001 Neiman Cellars Red Wine Caldwell Vineyard 93 Points

  Dark, brooding fruit, with smoke, blackberries, and spice on the nose. On the palate, somehow this is elegant despite being incredibly dark. Good spice. Not thick or rich at all. A lovely wine. Needs more time - maybe another 3-5 years.

  Serious smoke and some spice on the nose. On the palate, this is dark, rich, tight, and spicy. Very nice wine but OH so young. Needs many more years. 92 today, will clearly improve.

  Nose of coffee, raisins, dark chocolate, and violets. Pleasurable fruit, silky tannins. Young. Gorgeously elegant coffee notes, caramel, chocolate. A lovely wine.
