Introduction

This was the first dinner that I was in charge of planning food and venue. NoMi did a great job on the food, though I probalby would not do a sushi tray again just because it was difficult to manage. The wines, especially the reds, were largely disappointing. I don't think they were bad choices per se, they just didnt' show like they should have. Chad was my guest for this dinner.

Flight 1 - Hors d'Oeuveres (1 Note)

Sushi was good, but difficult to manage. The rest of the apps were just OK.

  • NV Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Aged in the society cellars for 3-5 years before serving, this was a lovely rich champagne, typical of the Bollinger house style - rich toasty, caramel. Takes on much more weight than a typical NV with more age though. Very nice.

Flight 2 - Chilled Main Loberster Salad with citrus, fennel, and a spicy burek (1 Note)

This was superb, especially the burek. There was a creamier sauce than the expected banyuls vinagrette. Some spiciness. Matched reasonably well with the chablis, but I would have paired it with the Gewurtz, personally.

Flight 3 - Chestnut and Pheasant Bisque with Iberico chorizo, carmelized onion foam, and truffle brioche (1 Note)

Fabulous. One of the best soup dishes I've had in a long time and a highlight of the dinner. Paired very nicely with the Gewurtz.

Flight 4 - Wild Mushroom Risotto, Crispy Sweetbreads, muscat de Beaumes de venise reduction (1 Note)

This was a very nice dish, especially the sweetbreads, but there were some large mushroom pieces that seemed a bit undercooked to me.

Flight 5 - Four Story Hill Farm Canard Apicus with apple and saffron chutney, date, and caraway compote (1 Note)

The duck was cooked to perfection and incredibly moist and tender. The spiciness and sweetness were delicious and balanced, but probably a bit much for the wine.

  • 1985 Pierre Barge Côte-Rôtie 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Rich spicy acidic red fruit on the palate. This was a bit disjointed and while it showed some nice Cote Rotie characteristics, it is not one of the better examples from 85. Substantial bottle variation as well.

Flight 6 - Jivara Chocolate Mousse Dome with flowery earl grey tea ganache and lemon verena creme (1 Note)

This was lovely on the plate and tasted very good too. A nice match with the port.
