Introduction

All wines were opened in the morning, decanted into generic bottles and allowed to rest in the cellar. Flights 1 and 2, as well as the itnroductory white, were served double blind. The theme for Flight 1 was pinot noirs from different countries. The theme for Flight 2 was Bordeaux varietals from different locales.

Flight 1 - Introductory white (1 Note)

  • 2008 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Heimbourg 93 Points

    France, Alsace

Really evolving nicely. Served blind. All guessed Riesling with pedigree. No one guessed Alsace. Honeyed appearance with thickness due to the residual sugar. On the nose, citrus, white flowers and pineapple. On the palate, honey, citrus, with impeccable balance. Off dry. Prime time in 2 years.

Flight 2 - Flight 1 (4 Notes)

Pinot Noirs from Different Countries

  • 2009 Bouchard Finlayson Pinot Noir Galpin Peak 93 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Lovely bright ruby appearance. Nose of red fruits, a little barnyard. Drinking beautifully, although there is no hurry to consume. Very old world in its style, and in fact several thought the wine was from the Old World.

  • 1998 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Easily the wine of the flight. This really needed the air, but by the time we tasted it, the wine was showing well. Gorgeous nose of undergrowth, earth, red fruits, sour cherries. On the palate, a serious, complex, bright Burgundy with a very long finish. At its peak in 5 years.

  • 2007 Hidden Bench Pinot Noir Locust Lane Vineyard 92 Points

Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Beamsville Bench VQA

This bottle was showing as somewhat restrained, but all the elements were there. Needs time for the fruit to show its stuff, but we know the wine has it; see my notes from the last bottle. At its peak in 3 years.

  • 2013 Belle Glos Pinot Noir Las Alturas Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

No one guessed this was pinot noir. Showed much more like a Syrah; in fact all my guests bar one guessed it was Syrah or Shiraz; the outlier thought cabernet sauvignon. This is a big wine that satiates the palate. Waves of sweet fruit and big richness, with balanced tannins and acidity. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it. Would be great with grilled sausage.

Flight 3 - Flight 2 (5 Notes)

Bordeaux Varietals from Different Locales

  • 2009 Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Malbec 92 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco

Almost black in appearance. Big, thick, concentrated, but balanced. Very Parker-like in its profile. A delicious wine, to go with seriously flavoured grilled red meats. Drinking now with some air.

  • 1996 Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Brilliant. Beautifully balanced, sweet, aromatic, complex. Shows its Bordeaux-like pedigree. In fact, almost everyone thought it was a Bordeaux. One of my favourite wines, drinking beautifully now.

  • 1998 Tertre Rôteboeuf 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Gorgeous dark colour, coats the glass. Very new world n its profile, but with the tobacco and cedar complexity that can only be Bordeaux. Thick, sweet and balanced beautifully. Drink now with a good decant.

  • 2003 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

Wonderful showing, but I feel the wine needs more time. Aromas of soy, vanilla, black fruits. On the palate, the fruit is a little subdued against what was expected, but the wine was a pleasure to enjoy. Alas, my only bottle; beautiful showing. In prime time in 5 years for those who have some (envy, envy).

  • 1998 Château Margaux 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Easily the wine of the flight and the wine of the night. Classic Margaux, starting to drink now. Bright red colour, intoxicating nose of cedar, vanilla, black fruits, sandalwood. On the palate, great balance and complexity, and a very long finish. Can be consumed now with a long decant; better in 5 years.
