Introduction

HL wants to share a bottle of Barossa Old Vine Company 2002 and that prompt me to have the idea of doing a horizontal tasting for 2002 Aussie as they are drinking very well now.

Flight 1 - Aperitif - Sparkling Shiraz (1 Note)

Thanks Happy for bringing us such a good sparkling Shiraz. Need time to open up.

  • NV Turkey Flat Sparkling Shiraz 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

This is a fine sparkling Shiraz that matured in a Solera system with an average age of 8 years and in seasoned oak hogsheads for up to 36 months, dosed with Pedro Ximènez following disgorgement and released November 2012.
Dark brooding red with fine beads, initial nose is still tight with blackberry and mocha notes.
It has a sweet creamy entry, exhibits blackberry, plum and hints of leather. Pretty dry on palate but it finishes long with hints of sweetness. A good quality sparkling Shiraz that will reward patient to drink it over few hours at least.

Flight 2 - Shiraz blend - Nine Popes vs. Euphonium Keyneton Estate (2 Notes)

Both tasted blind by other tasters and their preference for this flight is Henschke Euphonium Keyneton Estate.

  • 2002 Charles Melton Nine Popes 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Blend of Shiraz and Grenache.
Elegant nose, nice richness and suppleness on entry with plenty of sweet fruits, milk chocolate, black berry, plum and white pepper. Long lingering finish with soft chewy tannins. Holding very well and drink nicely at this tasting.

  • 2002 Henschke Euphonium Keyneton Estate 92 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

70% Shiraz, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.
Fresh and elegant on the nose along with spice, blackberry, plum and mocha.
Good weight on palate, exhibits mocha notes, milk chocolate and subtle ripe fruits with smooth texture and nice long spicy finish. It is a joy to drink now and slightly prefer this to the 2002 Nine Popes.

Flight 3 - 2002 Shiraz (4 Notes)

All 4 Shiraz were tasted blind for the participants but effectively 3 on blind after I tasted the 1 st bottle of BOVC and immediately called for the backup bottle.

  • 2002 Barossa Old Vine Wine Company Shiraz 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

1st bottle opened suffered from undesirable storage condition with wet cardboard smell and earthy palate.
Hence my backup bottle from different source was opened and it shows much better condition than the first bottle. Subtle earthy nose along with blackberry, spice, licorice, roasted coffee beans and subtle toasty oak. Palate is soft and mellowed but showing good palate richness, along with blackberry, ripe fruits and chocolate. Soft and velvety tannins. Drinking well now although it was overwhelmed by the subsequent wines in the lineup.

  • 2002 Warrenmang Shiraz Black Puma 92 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Pyrenees

Dark garnet with vibrant hue. Sweet floral nose with licorice, plum, blackberry and roasted coffee bean
Rich robust entry, very plummy on the palate with dark plum and sour plum along with blackberry violet and white pepper. Long finish with soft chewy tannins. Drank from the magnum bottle and it was one of the favourite, holding very well and it has more complete structure compared to other Shiraz in the lineup.

  • 2002 Elderton Shiraz Single Vineyard Command 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Dark brooding red. Tasted (half) blind but plenty of chocolate notes on the nose immediately reminds me this must be a Command, along with blackberry, spice and vanilla toasty oak. On palate it exhibits milk chocolate, plum, blackberry, fruits cake, licorice and well integrated oak. Long persistent finish with fine grain tannins. Very good and holding very well after 13 years. No doubt that Command is a Command and it is my favourite for this 2002 horizontal tasting.

  • 2002 Katnook Estate Shiraz Prodigy 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Dark Ruby, fresh and expressive aromas along with blackberry, bramble fruits, spice, eucalyptus and chocolate toasty oak. Smooth and richly entry, showing black and red berries, bramble fruits, some minty profile and peppery spice. Long finish with mocha oak aftertaste and fine chewy tannins.
Not from a region famous for Shiraz but this is surprisingly well received by other tasters too. Good effort from Katnook.
