  • 1999 Luis Pato Vinha Velha Vinha Barrosa Flawed

    Portugal, Beiras, Vinho Regional Beiras

Transparent, brownish colour, seems older than it is, but I haven't had many mature Baga wines, so don't know how representative it is. Dried Spanish sausage on the nose, very smoky. High accidity, cranberries on the palate, very mature and overall interesting. Nose develops some not so pleasant notes, that let's me think the wine was borderline faulty, so no score.

  • 2001 Niepoort Douro Batuta 91 Points

    Portugal, Douro

Bright plummy violet colour with a clear meniscus. Still quite oaky, intensely brambly nose, vanilla, peppery and may be even jammy. Expressively rich palate, grippy tannins. This was of a very high quality, but I am not sure it has a sense of place, seemed to be of international style. Would be nice to compare it directly with some other wines of different regions. Also it is still quite young, it can surely wait for some more years.

  • 2010 Niepoort - Raul Perez Douro Ultreia de Douro 87 Points

    Portugal, Douro

Dark but transparent intensely purple red colour. Jammy vanilla, brambly fruit, noticeable tannin, very good balance, but too young and in your face for my liking.
