Introduction

An interesting lineup. My favorite was definitely the gran reserva. I didn't guess it correctly blind, but I think I need more exposure to tempranillo.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2013 Château Belá (Egon Müller) Dry Riesling 86 Points

    Slovakia, Južnoslovenská, Štúrovský

Lemon-yellow; highly aromatic, grassy, cat urine, melon; palate is dry but some perception of sweetness may be high alcohol, ripe white fruit, medium to full bodied, high acid; medium length finish. Sauvignon blanc from a warm climate, new world, maybe Californian. Could be dry Alsatian riesling, has the aromatic and high acid but no petrol. 86

  • 2012 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Côte de Nuits Villages 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

Medium ruby, youthful; nose is highly aromatic, red cherry, earthy, damp compost, roses, funky comes out with swirling; palate is medium bodied, dry, hollow palate, red fruit, slight spice, high acid, alcohol 12.5. Thinking Italian, maybe Sangiovese. Chianti? Less likely Grenache or pinot given the body. 85
After reveal: defined by its savoriness, I could see pinot. Sangiovese maybe wasn't the right call because the tannins were low. It grows on me over time. 85-87

  • 2010 Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisière 84 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey

Light ruby; nose has medium aromatics, red cherry fruit, slight spice, very slight earth and darker fruits; palate is light bodied, high acid, smooth integrated tannins, balanced red fruit, slight spice, moderate intensity, midpalate slightly bland; finish is short-medium length. This does fit the profile for traditional burgundy, drinking well now in terms of its structure, but it lacks complexity and intensity. As a pop-and-pour, this is disappointing for its price of ~$30. Ready now and in the short term (next few years). 84
4-5 hours of air: Now this comes across as more oxidized, cough syrup on the nose; palate still has red fruit, high acid, hasn't fleshed out much. 84

  • 2012 Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo 85 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Medium ruby color without bricking; sharp bracing acidity, red cranberry, medium aromatic; palate is light bodied, medium-plus tannins, very high acid; short-medium finish. Could this be Nebbiolo? Entry-level. 85

  • 2010 Château Tertre Daugay 83 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Deep purple-ruby; nose has plums, slight chocolate, ripe red fruit; palate is full bodied, dry, ripe red and black fruits, high alcohol- 15%?, high tannins but soft; short-medium finish. My guess is new world merlot, within the last 5 years, medium quality. 83
After reveal, disappointing as a bordeaux. Doesn't have much bordeaux character.

  • 1998 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Monte Real Gran Reserva 90 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Medium ruby; nose is highly aromatic, complex, slight musk, red fruit, slight roses; medium bodied, very smooth medium tannins, well integrated, excellent red fruit, olives, slight alcohol towards the end, maybe 13.5-14 but balanced well; medium finish. High quality. Maybe a blend? Reminds me of a musar, so guessing maybe cinsault or carignan? 90+
