Introduction

We got together with a few friends for dinner and decided the theme would be Bordeaux. One couple surprised us when they brought along Alfio Moriconi and his wife Gloria. Alfio was fun to talk with. Overall a nice evening.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1989 Château Gruaud Larose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This was my favorite wine of the night. Ann's number two. The wine was decanted for about an hour. Showing lots of mushroom, leather, and earthy notes. Slight bell pepper accents. Elegant and complex. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

  • 1998 Clos Fourtet

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Decanted for two hours. Very fruity and primary still. Dark fruited and soft. A bit simple but there are shades of mushroom and bell pepper. Light tannins. Several people at the table, including Ann, had this as their favorite wine of the night. Good but not exciting.

  • 1995 Château Orisse du Casse

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Earthy, with mushroom and iron accents. Ripe, dark fruits, with Grand Marinier notes on the nose. Enjoyable.

  • 2000 Château Jaugue Blanc 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

The nose on this is quite earthy with a little barnyard funk. Dark fruited and soft with the same earthy barnyard notes on the palate. Fairly ripe.

  • 2005 Château Phélan Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Decanted two hours. Fruity nose. There is good concentration here. The wine is pretty plush and fruity with a fair amount of tannin still. Slight notes of pencil shavings, earth, leather and mocha. One of the guys said that he thought the finish was a bit short for this wine and questioned the storage, which was interesting as the wine was recently sourced from Wine Bid. I enjoyed the wine however.

  • 2003 Château Chasse-Spleen

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Fruity nose with just a little alcohol peaking through and a bit of fine leather. The leather carries through on the palate with soft and ripe dark fruits. The warm vintage shows a little. Enjoyed it.

  • 2005 Château Sansonnet

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This was my least favorite of the night. Ripe and modern in style but there is good acid. Black fruits, ripe, with some honey and barnyard notes. Later in the night it seemed a bit alcoholic.

  • 2011 Château Guiraud Le G 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Smells nice. Crystalline, candied lemon with slight tropical shadings initially. With air and at warmer temperature it turns much more tropical in tone. Good acid with a hint of sweetness. This was a bit different but I liked it.

Closing

Though I still have limited experience with Bordeaux wines, I am starting to favorite those from the left bank.
