Introduction

The annual Gordon's Wines customer appreciation event was great once again, although a bit smaller than it has been in prior years. The good news was we were able to spend more time with the wines we loved, and could almost be certain that we would get a pour of nearly everything that was opened. This year the selections from Rosenthal and Kobrand were awesome, and the Gordon's selections were superb.

Below are a handful of notes from the wines that were highlights for me on the day.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2005 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Nose: Peach, fresh baked bread, creamy lemon mouse and floral notes. Palate: very fine bubbles and gorgeous palate feel as others have noted. Finish: Lemon square, yeast and peach with great acidity. Fine Champagne.

  • 2012 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Nose: Pure and focused nose loaded with cherry fruit, plum skin and some soil, floral and herb notes. Palate: Very tight showing blackberry, tart cherry, spice and crushed stone. Lots of tannin make this almost chewy in the back palate. Finish: Very pure cherry again and some nice herbs.

Give this a long sleep in the cellar. Fun to try now however. 93+

  • 2010 Louis Jadot Griotte-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Nose: Huge red cherry, blackberry, focused fruit and some asphalt, smoke and floral notes. Palate: Wow, so many layers of powerful red and black fruit. Silky palate already with very fine tannins. Earth, mineral and game detectable. Finish: fills the nasal passages on the way down with black cherry, dark raspberry and smoke/game notes.

Distributor opened at a tasting for fans/friends. Great wine to try and learn about. Definitely a few steps ahead of the CSJ 12 from Jadot.

  • 2012 Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Nose: Massive blackberry, cherry Palate: Layered and full of Cherry, Blackberry, minerality, clove and allspice. Sweet fruit is built around earthy spicy nuance on this one. Seamless palate with significant underlying tannin. Finish: Complex with more spice, red/black fruit and floral notes.

This has it all, and will require significant cellar time.

  • 1991 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Allen Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Nose: Slightly maderized cherry on the nose, with a slightly cloudy color. Fantastic notes of sweet earth and brown sugar as well. Palate: Completely resolved, and fresher in the mouth than the nose suggested. Black Cherry, powdery mineral and tannin, sweet earth and some spice. Finish: Slowly falls off with red fruit, chalky mineral, and some fall leaves.

92+ Really shows how long these WS pinots can go.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Nose: Gorgeous red berries, strawberry, game, spice and leather notes. Palate: Beautifully resolved silky and balanced in the mouth. Great red fruit that gives sweet cherry, cranberry, red currant and sappy raspberry. This is backed up by minerality and a gamey note of raw duck and some sweet spices and pine notes. Complex and giving right now. Finish: Wow. grows more detailed as it finishes with a complex range of nuance.

Consumed with a fantastic lunch at Eastern Standard after the tasting. Thank you Marc! What a wine to end a great day of tasting.
