Introduction

New year's eve dinner consisted of following dishes:

Confit of lamb with truffle mashed potatoes and haricots verts, salad of heirloom tomatoes
Tomme de montagne, mild washed rind cheese
Plus desserts.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

I have almost no notes from this tasting - I focused on our lovely friends, my beautiful wife and the gorgeous dinner spread and the free flowing and spirited conversation. But I thoroughly enjoyed all the wines (we could not finish all the bottles). The following notes from memory a couple of days later...

  • 2002 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 95 Points

    France, Champagne

    At first this was
A delicious nose and a tight, fresh and spritzy palate that felt way too young to drink. But after a good many hours open, the palate started to unfold and it was very nice. I guess if you're a fan of mature, oxidized champagne, then you need to keep this beauty for more than ten years still, but if you like me, appreciate the freshness of young champagne, especially when the mousse is this delicate and the 'bulles' this fine, then this was the right time!

  • NV Christophe Mignon Champagne Brut Nature 91 Points

    France, Champagne

This suffered a bit from being too chilled and also matched against some more fine bred cousins, but still did alright. Obviously young and very much about freshness, and green apples, the 100% Pinot meunier brew was very interesting and also very 'brut'. Went great with the oysters, king crab and scallops. I believe this was degorged in 2014. Should be even better if you lay it down for a couple of years.

  • NV Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Réserve Oubliée 94 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Great wine! This had a fantastic combo of a mature, complex, open nose and a fresh invigorating palate. Loved the style. A little oxiditative style on the nose, but more like roasted almonds and baked apples, and full of fresh cut fruit, both red apples and more tropical fruit. Bought in December 2015.

  • 2010 Favia Cerro Sur 97 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A dense, if not chewy, fruit driven, new oak infused, Napa cab franc/Cabernet Sauvignon but with an excellent point of balance and some herbal, fresh, Loire valley expression layered in all that expensive Napa fruit. I loved it and it went real well with J.'s fab confit d'agneau. Jazzy stuff!

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Degorged January 2015, thus potentially still young, but I found this open for business, generous nose with a lot of mature and baked apples, almond pastry, some hints of fino, but really not much, more than anything great freshness. Bubbles were fine but not as fine as the pol roger cuvée Winston C. Tried at the same time.

Closing

Beautiful menu and execution as well as pairing added a nice touch to a great evening.

Best wines were the pol roger 2002 cuvée Winston Churchill and the 2010 Favia Cerro Sur. But I also really liked the Pierre Peters cuvée reserve oubliee.
