Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1989 Château Léoville Las Cases 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Corked was soaked completely, but extracted in 1 piece. Medium bricking. Fine, complex and typical nose - pencil shavings, cedar, black fruits, perfume. The nose would change over the course of a couple of hours though, at times becoming a little subdued. Fine palate, with typical acidity and super balance. Long finish. Enjoyed.

  • 2000 Brokenwood Shiraz Graveyard 91 Points

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Served blind. Deep, dark fruits with notes of iodine, truffle, earth. Medium palate is dense with savoury flavours. Touches of pepper and spice. It feels like a 'masculine' wine. Medium/long finish.

  • 1998 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Served blind. Popped and poured. Still a deep, impenetrable colour. Unmistakable Cabernet nose - leafy, black currant. Palate is dense and full bodied. It's full of black berry fruit, some spice, smoky earth. Tannins are in abundance but are resolving. After an hour or so in the glass, some trademark eucalyptus notes emerged. It's a meal in itself. Certainly would benefit from a good decant if consuming in the near future.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 1972 Penfolds Grange 87 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Decanted and poured immediately. Served blind. This bottle had been cliniced in 1998. Bricking colour. Tertiary aromas - old leather, earthy, cloves. The palate is a disappointment. Seems faded and beyond its use by date. No fruit to speak of, some vegetal characters, weak finish. It was a surprise when the label was revealed. 1972 is thought to be a good vintage, but maybe the best years are behind it. 90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Attractive aromas of wild black fruits, eucalyptus, roses, lavender. Palate is medium/full. Plenty going on to maintain interest. Tannins are fine and rounded but ever present. Long finish. Really good, with plenty left in the tank.
