Medium yellow with reflections of gold. Elevated intensity aromatics of cantaloupe melon with arugula, dried peach, slight dried pineapple. No signs of botrytis. No overt oxidation or development, but the fruit character supports some age. Dry, m body, m+ alcohol (13.5%), m+ acid, m phenolic bitterness. Slight vegetal radish/romanesco on the finish.
Very nice, not quite smaragd-level gruner. A bit pricey - I like the Alzinger Federspiel a bit better than this.
Clean, elevated intensity nose. Ripe blackberry, cracked black pepper, ripe jammy, smoked meat. Slight rosemary/herbs du provence. Earth isn't prominent. Ripe red cherry and tart cranberry (millerandage). No overt oak on the nose.
Dry, full-bodied, with elevated alcohol (seems around 14.5%), medium acid, medium tannins (fine-grained) and high bitterness on the finish. Dried-out on the finish.
full bodied, elevated alcohol - 14.5 (actually 13.5%). medium acid, medium tannins, very bitter and fine-grained. There's ripe cherry and tart cranberry. Millerandage. Finishes very dry.
Initial conclusion: The black pepper, millerandage, medium acid, lack of oak, and high alcohol all point to a GSM blend from the Southern Rhone Valley. There seems to be a little development.

-Too dry and structured for Aussie Shiraz or GSM -Acid is too low for Northern Rhone Syrah

2011 E. Guigal Hermitage Blanc 85 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Clear, bright.
Medium concentration gold. Elevated tears.
Relatively intense nose, slightly reductive, slight oak. slight dried peach. slight apricot - fresh, slight dried meat - a little pommaceous fruit. Something strange and familiar - camphor, baby-wipe, raw/bitter almond.
Dry, full-bodied, m+ alc (13.5%, feels 14%), diminished acid, m+ phenolic bitterness.
Slight oak - sea salt caramel, buttercream.
Interesting. Not my favorite aromatics. Really acid-deficient palate though I think it has some mineral energy to sustain it.
